Here's something to think about and express your views on. Auburn went from a 3-9 record in 2012 to a 12-2 record and a runner-up finish to the national champions last year. Now I am in no way suggesting that will happen for us, nowhere close. However, we saw how good the offense was in the spring. We really don't know how good the defense will be until the 16 new defensive players are added to the mix but I think we can assume they will be much better also. Now you see all the predictions where the Vols will only win 5 or 6 games. Why is it a stretch to believe that if Butch gets all the pieces in place we could surprise a lot of people and win 7 or 8 games? :crossfingers:

There isnt a single common characteristic between that Auburn team and our team this year.......outside of a crappy record the season before. Auburn brought back a coach who had all of his players already there and most with a lot of experience.

While Auburn played a few freshman in backup roles we have to play a lot of freshman a lot of snaps. they did not have to depend on freshman for a lot of snaps.

Lawson and Adams are the only 2 who played very much and both were 5 star freshman

Gene Chizik wasn't a good coach, but he knew how to recruit. Malzahn was handed a pretty good roster compared to what CBJ inherited.

Not to mention the high level of recruiting maintained by Gene before he got canned, they has solid recruiting classes in the years before Gus took over, were just now seeing recruiting success and a talented roster will take time, plus Gus had the gimmick offense of the decade don't look for him to have that much success for a while as teams are already preparing for him.

Plus we have major qb issues. Auburn qb miles better than rocket boy n worley last yr.

And every year lately our motto has been the coach just needs more time to get his players.. Lol heck I suppose its never the coach but always the players..

Auburns QB was recruited as a linebacker

Apples to oranges comparison, man. Auburn had depth, experience, and didn't have to rely mainly on first year players.

Tennessee should take an approach that has never been tried on rebuilding a program. Change the head coach every year until one wins a championship... might be the quickest approach

Rosters don't compare yet, but a couple more classes like this year's and we will compete with anyone. For this year I can say that the young guys are going to be flying around and if a team doesn't bring their "A" game against us, we will get a couple upsets.

The big thing for Auburn was they brought back NFL talent and experience on both the offensive and defensive lines. Everyone points to Cam Newton and Mike Dyer but theres a reason they were able to dominate SEC games. Its the same answer as always: win the line of scrimmage, win titles. Tennessee has talent on both fronts but we are severely short in meaningful experience. Thats what keeps us from pulling
an Auburn.

Edit: For some reason I thought you were talking about their NC season but this point basically applies to last years Auburn team too. My bad.

Auburn had 5 straight years of top 10 recruiting classes. That team was always good when Gus had the keys.

We aren't even in the same hemisphere in terms of overall talent and depth. When I think about Marshall being a converted DB or w/e I don't think about it from the standpoint of "geez, they are so thin they have to play a db at QB", I think "Their o-line and offensive scheme is so good they can play a DB at QB and win the SEC"

What Auburn did, that we should do is hire the person that is on the NCAA infraction committee. :whistling:

Among other reasons that no one will admit (and I like butch jones), Gus Malzahn is special.

Gus is one of the brightest football minds in the game today. Just look at the success Auburn had with him, the disaster that occurred after he left, and then the immediate turnaround when he came back. He was always the catalyst.

I agree, but there wasnt recruiting issues. Even when they was quiting on the field they still had 4-5* players on the field, we didnt. The attrition was show when other teams spread us out...we looked like we had 2 less players on the field than the other team..we will see signs this year, but we be even come 2015.

One thing to note -- Auburn did not convert Marshall from DB to QB.

He had played QB before in high school and Georgia made him a DB. He left and played QB in juco.
