What I've noticed on free throws, sometimes they step to the line and as soon as the referee hands them the ball they immediately shoot. They need to take a second or two to focus before they take the shot.
Shooting free throws is similar to putting in golf in that it's all about finding a routine that works and repeating that process exactly. There's no set way to go about it, each player is going to have their own routine - how many bounces, spinning the ball or not, finding the laces, when to look at the basket, etc. - and they have to repeat that routine every shot. The best FT shooters do that with the most minimal of actions and movement in the shooting motion.
