Austin Nichols interview...

Notable mentions...

Eliminated Florida and UNC because they are deep at his position, and because they are still recruiting players at his position.

Says he hasn't decided whether or not he wants to stay close or get out. He's close with his family, but at the same time likes the idea of getting out on his own.

Says he is really close with his sister and has always wanted to go to the same college as her.

He would love to play with Robert, and says that they really click well together.

Says watching coach K coach the Olympics is a positive, says K texts him pretty much after every game. Texted him after yesterday's game and said "we got gold".

Biggest thing I took from this is he's very serious about the PT and depth at his position, as well as who the schools are recruiting.

MC was suggesting that it may not actually be that important to him, but the fact he eliminated Florida(who many thought to be the leader) because of their depth at the position shows how serious he is about the PT.

Good news for Tennessee IMO.

MC,

I want to apologize for questioning why you visit this board. I was bored so I was reading memphistigers.org....I see you post there, that crap is awful, here's a few of my fav's...

-At the end of the day, it will be down to Duke, Memphis and may be Vanderbilt... I personally think Duke got the upper hand.
(no mention of UT, haha?)

-Nicols working with Sarwar is more than enough for me to not want to have anything to do with him. When the father talked about the Memphis visit, he said all the right things. He was interested in the campus, in the program and his role if he became a Tiger. Every other school on Nichols' list makes absolutely no sense.
UT
Crappy program that will actually be strong at the 4 with Maymon and Stokes
(this moron is saying maymon will be here next year)

-I was completely wrong. He only had 2 years experience so I assumed that he was a junior. Thank you for pointing that out. I'm glad I'm wrong. That means that not only will UT suck this year, but they will also suck next year.

Duke offer has clouded his mind, as it should. Hard not to want to play for them.

K just has that stigma about him that it's hard not to be blown away.

However, if he is serious about PT(which by eliminating Florida seems to be) then it just wouldn't make sense to go to Duke. Hopefully when the smoke clears of K and the Olympics, he looks at that depth chart and who they're still recruiting long and hard.

I'm as big of a Vol fan as you'll find but if Coach K came calling I'd think long and hard about it. Just sayin. That man is one of the top 3 coaches of all time.

This sentence screams " I DON'T LIKE OR WANT MUCH COMPETITION FOR PLAYING TIME".

Yea that's not a new thing, he's been saying that for awhile. It was just starting to get questioned how serious he was about that. Well, by eliminating Florida and UNC he showed he means it so...hope is that he realizes Duke is pretty damn deep and talented at forward too.

I get what you mean. Just makes me wonder how tough (competitive) the guy is, or if he's scared of competition?

I'm not sure about him now. I would love to land him, but his comments about playing time, the way he said it had me worried, does he have a huge ego.

What'd he say that turned you off?

He wants to go somewhere that he's going to play, it's understandable. He's a talented guy, however, let's use duke as an example. This year they have both plumlees, and amille Jefferson playing forward. That's 3, likely NBA guys at his position. Next year you have, one of the plumlees, probably Jefferson, an Mississippi state transfer Rodney hood becomes eligible, once again 3 NBA guys at your position. So now you're looking at junior year before you likely see any significant minutes and that's assuming that in those 2 years duke doesn't pull a one and done F who flat out is just better than you and demands PT. that's also assuming that Duke doesn't land any of the much higher rated forwards they are recruiting besides him.

It's not to say he's not competitive, but its being smart, and his family is pretty intelligent. They would like him to be in the NBA one day I'm sure, there's a chance that if you go somewhere thats loaded at your position you could take a backseat for a few years. Who knows what happens in that time, do you lose the drive because you're a benchwarmer, do scouts question your ability, lots can happen to hurt your chances.

Oh no I'm not turned off by it, I just don't like the way it sounded. To be the best, you've got to go against the best. It sounded like to me, he's afraid to compete for good position. Now I do agree it could be a smart decision, but I just don't know.

I mean what is he going to do if he does get drafted to a team stacked at his position. If he not going to sign with them, then go overseas so he can start. I just like to see them willing to compete.

Great news. I think all signs point at UT. You don't turn down a gold medal and respected coach like Coach K but at the same time..everything points to UT. I hope Hubbs goes first and hopefully Nichols follow shortly after that.

Well He plays on a stacked AAU team against the best in the country and I've never heard anything about him being unwilling to compete.

Once he's in the NBA, that's that, thats the goal is make it. Once there you have no control really of where you go, you have control of where you go to college.

I just don't think it's him being unwilling to compete I think he's bein smart and realistic. I mean what are his odds of beating out Plumlee? Then beating out top 25 will be sophomore Jefferson? Then beating out sophomore stud Rodney Hood who will be eligible next year? These guys will all have a few years under K and be much mre prepared than Austin, he probably shouldn't be able to beat them out, so IMO he's just being realistic.

UNC & Florida were loaded at his position, signing more guys at his position in 2013, and still recruiting more elite post guys.

Couldn't have said it better. In today's game, it's really not about competing for the job. In reality, once your in college or the professional ranks, everybody can play and compete. Even those scrubs that walk-on or the scholarship players that don't get PT, they can ALL play. They all have something to prove in practice. I know guys in DII, NAIA, and small ball DI that can play with high DI guys. It's more about setting yourself up for the future and putting yourself in a position to shine and win. Typically, it's not enough just to shine and lose or win and not shine. Even the players that make it to the league that came from losing programs, well that is in their draft scouting report too. Nichols is working in his best interest to position himself in the best way possible. The guy is Top 40. You can't get there if you don't compete.

First, I haven't heard the interview, so I can't comment on that. But I can comment on both the UM and UT fanbase reaction to it. Memphis fans (some of the more homeristic) listened to the interview and are convinced that Nichols is cold on UT and that it's probably a Memphis/Duke race.

UT fans in this thread hear the complete opposite; that he was praising UT and it's a Duke/UT race.

My advice: don't pay much attention to an interview unless a prospect is cutting his list or committing to a school. The rest is in the eye of the beholder.
