I actually went and played some tennis this evening (indoors...it's freezing outside) and everybody was raving about this Dolgopolov character that beat Soderling. Have any of yall seen this guy play yet? He's got Murray next.

I saw him take down Jo Willie, winning the last two at 1. I knew Soderling had his work cut out for him after that. Murray handled him, but not without dropping a set. Kid has the chance to be a star. I'd like to see him add an inch or two to his ball toss. That toss reminds me of Roscoe Tanner back in the day.

Down goes Woz. It's amazing that as predictable as the men's side is (Nadal with a splash of Federer), the women's side is completely unpredictable. No female has really been able to put any sort of legit claim of best women's tennis player. Every player that rises to the top suffers some sort of injury and tumbles back down. The Williams' sisters, Ana, Jankovic, Clijsters, Henin (who retired again btw), the list goes on. Now Woz just can't get over the hump at majors. Pretty sure though I saw where as long as she reached the semis she would retain the #1 ranking so at least she has that going for her.

I had picked Clijsters to win it all anyways.

Men's tennis right now is arguably the best it has ever been in terms of quality of players.

Women's tennis right now is arguably the worst it has ever been in terms of quality of players.

If Serena is in a tournament, I will pick her to win. If Serena isn't in it, then I'll pick Clijsters. After that, I see a lot of mediocrity.

It happens. Think back to men's tennis in 2003 when Hewitt (Ha!) was the best player in the world. We learned a few years later than Hewitt wasn't really worth his weight in dog**** and that was just a really weak mini-era in tennis.

Federer is unstoppable

Except when he gets stopped.

Man, I'm so bummed with the Rafa situation. Rafa is my guy (no homo) and I wanted to see an epic final.

I guess an epic final could still happen. I'm rooting for Murray -- who is definitely the best player in the world without a major title -- to get over the hump and win this one.

if Federer and Nadal weren't in men's tennis, you'd have an argument. They are still both heads and shoulders above everyone else in the game. The next closest IMO is Djoke when he's on. Murray is really good, Ferrer is really good and Soderling and Berdych are good. After that, it's a free for all. But it matters not, because no one compares to Fed and Rafa.

On the women's side it's just mounted with injuries. The Williams' sisters, Ivanovic, Sharapova, Clijsters and Jankovic are great players who just can't stay healthy.

Fed's out, so I'm out on this thread. Too bad Djoker is a head case or it would have been a 3-headed tennis rivalry the past few seasons. He's just too likely to disappear mentally for much of a given year. Maybe now he gets it together.

Fed must be disappointed with this slam performance b/c he had such a strong pre-slam run. At some point it is the beginning of the end for all greats. Only time will tell, but I don't see much future success when he meets a ball-basher that is on their game in these slams. They pound him off the court. It is not so much he doesn't bring his game as those guys playing out of their minds. I still believe Fed will be in the picture at Wimbledon.

I gotta pull for Murray in the final if he gets there. I like Djokovic, but Murray is deserving.

See you when the FO thread opens.

Djoke dominates. It had all the makings of a great final through 8 games, the Djoke finally broke Murray's serve. After that Djoke controlled just about every aspect of the game.

As mentioned in previous Slam threads, I lost favor with Djoke because of his attitude. Hopefully though he can stay on his game all year, maybe even for years to come and create more competition for Fed and Rafa. See y'all on the clay.
