Available Coaches

If we can't get Gruden I say go after Chip Kelly and offer him 6 million a year. It absolutely must be a proven coach and not an up and comer. You don't turn this losing ship around with an up and comer. Not enough time.

The college game is all about recruiting and unless you make a hire that makes a HUGE splash then you're just rolling the dice with another unproven Dooley-esque hire.

And let me say that in all of this talk about firing and hiring and Dooley this and Dooley that I think the man deserves respect. You can part ways with someone with class. He's a fine man and as someone who likes to see Tennessee win he's been a class act but it just isn't happening and it does not appear that there is any light at the end of the tunnel. Who is going to want to come and play for Dooley now?

That is the thing people say we are broke, and its "true." Yes we posted a 5 million loss in the AD but that is due to the economy, selling tickets, renovations, etc. The big money donors have little to do with that other than their donations, season tickets and I am sure some make special donations to help pay for it but if they see this program struggling and want a new coach they can afford it.

If we're going to throw out unlikely names, I say Bill Cowher.

Gotta hit up the big money boosters. THEY have the money, but will they?

They only need to look at Alabama to see what investment does. You absolutely have to make a HUGE splash and to make such a splash you have to dangle that money to get the right guy.

Tell Gruden you'll give him 6 million with incentives and we're off to the races. This team turns around instantaneously and is infused with excitement. People start buying everything under the sun with UT on it and the 6 million seems like a bargain.

That or go after Chip Kelly. Make Gruden jealous and realize what he might be missing. You put the money out there and then give incentives on top of that and you'll get a top tier coach. Does anybody think giving Saban 5 million a year hasn't reaped them that money back ten fold?

Gotta send the money if your gonna land a BIG fish. Dooley is a transition coach and needs to go, but will Hart spend the money to land the BIG one?

No.... It's not. It's a sleeping giant.

We are 5 mil in the red and no proven coach is coming. The only good coaches are Saban and NFL coaches. Name one other realistic college coach we could hire. No one that is who, it's over guys just convert Neyland into an outdoor classroom.

Plus all the assistant coaches buy outs, the new coaches buy out if he is at another job and him and his staffs salary. We are done.

Yeah, but we have a booster in the oil industry. How lucky are we, seriously? I don't think money is a problem either. Those guys are UT fans, and want to see the program succeed as much as any fan. The question is, how much do they like Dooley?

The problem with all that?

Their only return on that investment would (hopefully) be an improved, successful UT football program. Its not an investment...its a donation.

If they're willing to do that in an crap economy, more power to them. I can't see it happening.

Oh I'd say "somehow" they get more out of that investment than we might really ever know. But I do get your point.

We're gonna have to go out west and get one of the young guns coaching up the mid-majors...Petersen obviously is EVERYONE's numero uno, but I don't think he's truly available...same with Gary Patterson. Kyle Whittingham would be a great hire here, as would Mendenhall, I believe. Art Briles turned a hurdler into a Heisman winner at Baylor and put them back on the map and into contention again.
