One needs to understand where the nickname came from in Anzio where a German officer wrote the following:
"American parachutists...devils in baggy pants...are less than 100 meters from my outpost line. I can't sleep at night; they pop up from nowhere and we never know when or how they will strike next. Seems like the black-hearted devils are everywhere..."
2nd 504 PIR White Devils 90-94
Sorta the same situation on my end with my grandfather, who was in 82nd, Merrill's Marauders and SF. When I got to Bragg, the first purchase I made was sterling silver wings for him as the original ones that he was issued were stolen in Korea. When were you there? My uncle was a Devil in Baggy Pants. Much, much later than WWII though. I bought him their PT shirt while I was stationed at Bragg. Perhaps me giving him a woobie is the only time I've seen him happier.
