I agree with your post except for Fulmers name being mentioned. He's the only one that didn't look, or act, as if he was intentionally trying to sabotage our program, the rest, the hell with them.

I don't think Fulmer intentionally sabotaged the program either. I do believe he got too comfortable in his position and his actions tipped over the first series of dominions that lead to our state today.

i was 8 years old... remeber EXACTLY where i was during the "fumble"... watching the video... i wonder if vols football will ever mean as much as it did.. back then my whole extended family would get together..... also seeing the hits that would almost certainly be flagged in todays game... i miss it so much,

Its sad some (fans?) bash a HOF Coach that had such a tremendous record for the team they claim to support. Its surreal to me.
Ever think he was working like mad to replace(shake the magical tree) assistants with top notch coaches that would rival Cut,Chavis, Sanders? Come on.
Lazy? no
Needed some help? yes
hello...?? its not a video game
Whatever,,, bash away

Nuck the Fegavols!

Even in Fulmer's worst years, the Vols were going to the SECCG every 3 years. A true Volunteer who is respected by knowledgeable football fans.

I think we give a little to much credit to Fulmer. He took over from a great Majors coach. Johnny would have gotten us there. Fulmer was just riding the wave of momentum and foundation that was already in place.

He didn't get us there, though. Fulmer did.

I love Johnny, but there was a clear improvement in the team when Phil took over.

I don't think Majors would have gotten us there. He was on the downslope of his career and I give Dickey credit for knowing when to make a change (it was a gutsy move, one I don't think any of our subsequent ADs would be capable of). Fulmer did a great job in getting us to the next stage. But then, he spent almost a decade coasting and left the program in far worse shape than when he found it.

Exactly, I remember from about 1988 on I was ready for CJM to be gone. I remember vividly 3rd and 4 or more was runs straight up the middle for maybe a yard. There are many variables that aided in the demise of CPF. He shares some of the blame, but not all. I think hammy had a hand it as well.
