Backyard Bird Watchers

An owl hoots from the oaks in my front yard. It would be grand if it roosted there so that I could see it after dawn.

Musgovy duck. Never even heard of this. Had to look it up

View attachment 698601
I had Musgovy ducks on our farm in East Tennessee, back when kids were in school. Mine were always white with an ugly head, big ducks, could fly like a F-15. Had a creek that fed a pond but was flowing water. Couldn’t keep them long cause as an old timer told me “ducks follow running water.
Did have young ones a time or three, but as all ducks … just poop everywhere.

This has surely been discussed itt, but its too long and I'm lazy.

For xmas I'd like to get my gf a birdfeeder with a camera. I've done minimal research and can think of pros and cons to the two big options I see -- solar powered, and an AI-based subscription to identify what has arrived to the feeder.

The latter of those seems like another pain in the arse subscription deal, impossible to get out of, and seems to me unnecessary. I'd think figuring out anything exotic would be half the fun.
But I do want it to connect to her iphone so she can see what is out there, or what came by that day.

Just wondering if folks have strong opinions on this subject.

Check out Wild Birds Unlimited. If you have one in your area.

Ha! Just bought one on Amazon. So many different options and just went with the newest "PRO" version. Reviews say the camera is much better on it than the original version and, while more expensive, seems like it is easier to set up and use.

There is one nearby but when I look at their online store they had basically none of them posted, which made me think its not a priority. Odd.

Hope it works out. Keep us updated. You will be amazed at how many different birds visit.

This morning, there were two turkey vultures roosting in a large hickory at the rear border of my neighbors’ property. With the storms moving east and a pause in the rain, they took flight and circled over me before moving on. I got a great view of them and their impressive wingspans.

Watch a flock of 8 small, black headed vultures trying to make their way south over my property. The upper winds are screaming west to east, and they’re folding in their wings, trying to make headway south, but they’re being pushed east. Eventually, they surrendered to a ESE direction.

A large pair of red tailed hawks are roosting in the hickory at the northern edge of my property. As I write this, one has moved to the nearby church steeple.
We have a pair of red shouldered hawks that have nested in our backyard for almost one year now. Enjoy watching them in the mornings while drinking coffee. Hope to see them with some chicks this spring!

Anyone else enjoying the white throated sparrows and dark eyed juncos this winter? They're very active in yard this season

Another large flock of boat tail grackles surround my property this morning. Some in the hickory trees at the back border of my property, some are worming my neighbors’ yards.

At our house last week, a young bird crashed into a window as I was watching. It lay stunned on the ground, then an adult came by, did a little "dance" & pecked it; soon, another adult arrived & did the same. All of the sudden, the juvenile stirred & flew off. Happy ending? Sadly, no...next day I found the little one dead in another part of the yard. The birds were Northern Flicker, likely heading south for the winter. Here's a photo I found.

Just had my first Northern Flicker at the Bird Buddy a few days ago.
