Its hard for me because I still love racing and still watch all of them but I don't love the way NASCAR has done alot over the past 5-7 years especially. I will continue to watch though because its part habit and I still do hope to see some good racing every once in awhile through the year. There are usually honestly only 4-5 GOOD races a year and you never know when they are coming so I just watch all that I can.
Anyway, even though I don't want to see NASCAR fail totally or anything I really wouldn't mind only seeing about 30,000 fans in the stands at California. It would further proove the point that:
1. The track is crap and copying Michigan and running Cup cars on it wasn't the smartest thing to do in the world.
2. The fairweather fans are GONE. The real fans, the one's NASCAR wanted to distance themselves from, are mostly still here. As miserable as the weather is in Rockingham this time of the year they could about outdraw these California races and they were much more interesting.
3. Maybe NASCAR could have at least "looked" like they tried to finish the Daytona 500. Backlash would be good for California. I heard 3 national radio hosts on ESPN Radio yesterday all making fun and blistering NASCAR for what happened Sunday.
I expect to see many empty seats at California, even more than last year. Maybe as many as 20%.
I like road courses, and would like to see one or two more. They would need to be on regular Road Race tracks IMO. I am a biased fan of Mid-Ohio, and I like Road America, but NASCAR doesn't like long tracks. They run the short course at the Glen and shortened up Infineon.
Watch the Nationwide and Truck races Saturday. I'd be shocked if it's half full. I think 20% for the Sunday show is giving it too much credit.
Robin Miller reported they have ONLY sold 21,000 tickets to the CUP race this coming Sunday. God I can only hope that's true and they only get about 25,000 people in the stands there. I'm sure THAT would be the death knell for one of California's two races right there.
both places would require a fair amount of work to handle a NASCAR event these days. just look at them on a map. nothing but 2 and 4 lane highways.
but i'm with you, Bristol isn't exactly easy to get around on a race weekend and yet they figure it out. night races at North Wilksboro or Rockingham could have potential.
i've seen recent pics of wilksboro. that place is pretty crummy now :cray:
