Cobbs co-defendant in armed robbery charges arrested

Three arrest affidavits issued for former La Vega High School and current University of Oklahoma cornerback Parrish Cobb and his co-defendant, Ayorinde Jelani Gibson, detail their alleged involvement in three armed robberies in Bellmead, the city of Waco and at Baylor University over the span of three days earlier this month.
Cobb, 19, was released from the McLennan County Jail on Wednesday morning after he turned himself in to authorities late Tuesday on three first-degree felony aggravated robbery charges. He was released after posting a $90,000 bond.
Gibson, 20, was arrested by U.S. marshals Wednesday and was taken to McLennan County Jail on the Bellmead first-degree aggravated robbery felony charge. Authorities said other charges may be forthcoming as investigations remain ongoing. Bond information was not available.
Baylor, Bellmead and Waco police think Cobb drove a 2015 Dodge Challenger in three robberies between Jan. 7 and 10. Gibson rode in Cobbs car and is thought to be the man who robbed victims at gunpoint and stole property, Bellmead police Sgt. Kory Martin said.
Cobb did not address the charges with the Tribune-Herald as he left jail Wednesday morning, saying only, Dont assume things.
Cobbs attorneys, John L. Lewis and J.R. Vicha, declined comment Wednesday morning.
Gibson was in the process of being booked into jail late Wednesday afternoon.
3 armed robbery cases
On Jan. 7, Baylor police were called to a robbery near the McLane Student Life Center on campus after a 19-year-old student was robbed at gunpoint, an arrest affidavit states. Cobb later was identified as the driver of a Dodge Challenger that blocked the student in as he was leaving the parking lot.
As the victim was backing out of his parking space, a black, two-door sports car blocked him in, causing him to stop, the arrest affidavit states. The victim (said) the passenger of the sports car exited his vehicle, approached the victims driver-side door. The suspect had a gun in his right hand, pointed it at the victims head and demanded money. The victim, scared for his life, reached for his backpack and gave it to the gunman.
The suspect, later identified as Gibson, got back into the sports car and left at a high rate of speed toward University Parks Drive, the arrest affidavit states.
Two other robberies were reported Jan. 10. Victims and witnesses to the two other robberies made similar reports of two men in a black two-door sports car, the arrest affidavit states.
On Jan. 10, Waco police were called to the 1600 block of South Fifth Street shortly before 10 p.m. after a man told police he was walking in the area when a dark-colored sports car pulled up next to him. A man jumped out of the passenger side of the car, pointed a pistol at the pedestrian and demanded his wallet, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said. No one was injured in the robbery.
About an hour and a half later, Bellmead police were called to a similar robbery at 110 E. Loop 340 at a Valero convenience store, where a 27-year-old man who was traveling from Longview with a family member reported being robbed outside the business.
The arrest affidavit states the driver of a black Dodge Challenger, later identified as Cobb, entered and left the convenience store. Surveillance cameras captured the activity as a pickup truck pulled into the convenience store property near a gas pump.
The passenger exits the black Dodge Challenger and walks around the gas pump on the far away side from the camera, the arrest affidavit states. According to the victim, the passenger points a black handgun at him, demanding money. The victim gave him his entire wallet with all the contents to the passenger suspect.
About 1:10 a.m., a Waco police officer located the suspect vehicle, bearing a temporary Texas paper tag, police reported.
The Dodge Challenger was also displaying an Oklahoma University parking permit, the arrest affidavit states. A phone call placed to Oklahoma University revealed the owner of the parking permit was Parrish Cobb.
A search warrant was issued for the car, and investigators found a BB gun and clothing described by the victims of the robberies, the arrest affidavit states.
Martin said no additional arrests are expected in the Bellmead robbery case as Gibson and Cobb are the primary suspects. He said the investigation remains ongoing.
Gibson also was arrested in October on a possession of a controlled substance charge. At the time, police said Gibson exited a moving vehicle driven by Lemytrick Tarod Proctor, 34, who continued to flee. Proctor has since been indicted charges of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
University of Oklahoma officials are aware of the charges against Cobb, who played in four games as a freshman defensive back in the fall, and Cobb has been suspended from the team, an athletics spokesman said via email late Tuesday.
