So let me get this straight... she used money from her own retirement fund to buy a retirement home?

There are penalties for early withdrawal or fraudulent withdrawal of our tax deferred retirement accounts.

I absolutely love how our elected officials pass laws with restrictions on us but don’t expect the same restrictions to apply to them. Sadly, too often they don’t….

It is BS but she broke the law even though it’s a BS law.
There are mechanisms by which one can remove retirement funds early. She apparently thought she didn’t have to play by the same rules as everyone else.

Which is especially egregious, as it is (was) her job to hold others accountable for breaking the rules.

Yeah, I understand that. Why do these laws exist? And is it really worthy of going to jail?

Yeah, I understand this, also. A two tiered legal system... but this is a victimless "crime".

Since 1913, the federal government has had the right to tax every dollar you make. There are limited ways you can avoid paying taxes on every dollar, one is to contribute to a qualified retirement plan but early withdrawal tax penalties apply if you chose to take the money out early. She chose to risk going to jail instead of paying her taxes. Thousands of Americans in the past have made the same choice. Those that get caught pay to stiff price to encourage you & me to pay our taxes.

The thousands of new IRS agents being added are not going to collect cans to earn their keep. They’ll come after everyone they can.
