But clearly a win for UF or UA helps their respective recruiting, and is a detriment to our program.
I don't think that the success of a rival school on the field and the success of our recruiting are mutually exclusive. While a rival's success can be seen as a condition precedent to our demise, that result is not assured. The depth of Florida is an advantage for CLK by offering early playing time. This is, i'm told, one of Saban's biggest pitch to recruits.
I would say that during the 90s there were no teams stronger in the SEC then the Vols, Florida and Alabama. Yet, these teams perceived lock on recruiting did not prevent other teams (like Auburn, LSU, and Georgia) from improving thier programs by great recruiting. While Florida has maintained its position, Alabama has returned to the elite of the SEC and the Vols will to, in time. My belief is that that return will be quickened by playing in a perceived strong conference.
With the SEC enjoying such a strong reputation, CLK only needs to add a quality SEC win to the wins over teams we should beat and a lofty national ranking will follow. This, in turn, builds a "buzz" and helps recruiting. Over the last several years, SEC teams have been well represented near the top of the recruiting rankings. For a perceived good conference, the recruiting pie truly grows. The losers are non-BCS conferences and those conferences perceived to be weak (Big 10 and the majority of the Pac 10).
So, my long winded post is just an effort to point out the benefits of a strong conference to some of the petty, short sided, reasoning that seems to litter the board. Present company excluded.
