So the deal is thus. If he had stepped out and reestablished himself and been the first touch the ball it would be a penalty; however, the ball was tipped so Moss was no longer the first to touch it so since he stepped out and reestablished himself back in it's a catch.

You can’t be the first to touch the ball if you go out on your own, which he did. The Bama player barely tipped the ball so he was the first player to touch it and then the LSU player had his feet in when he caught the ball.
