I'm glad they finally put that poor animal out of its misery.

Barbaro was put to sleep today. I was hoping he was going to make it through the ordeal but too many complications.

That is a bummer. I am not a horseracing buff or anything but the story is a downer to say the least.

How much Elmer's Glue can they make out of a $7,000,000.00 horse anyway? I would guess about $25 worth.

When he was injured in the Preakness, that was one of the sickest feelings I have ever had watching a live sporting event. He had a chance for greatness, and in an instant you knew his life was over. I was disgusted at the time.

A post that truly exemplifies the intellect of Alabama fans. I don't know about the use of deceased horses, but you stooges have lived over 20 years now off an expired Bear.

20 years is nothing compared to how long you will live off of the '98 National Championship.

I'm really not trying to be a jerk or something but I really don't understand why people are so sad or upset or whatever the case may be. It was a just a horse, animals die all the time. I'm aware how "special" she was but do you think the people that owned her are sad because the horse died or because they won't make anymore $? I don't follow horse racing so I'm really wondering about that. Are these horses exploited just so rich people can become richer or do people really care for these horses?

The ESPN story last night stated that Barbaro left no progeny. Does anybody know if they were able to collect any semen? I know it is a difficult process for a horse on a bum leg, but I would have thought the owners would have figured something out. His seed would be worth millions.

JZVOL, I think people are upset because Barbaro looked to have the makings of a great champion athlete but was tragically struck down before he could fulfill his legacy. The struggle for his life also gives the story a "heart of a champion" feel, whether true or not. The fact that he was a "cute horsey" doesn't hurt, either.

You've never owned a horse, I guess.

no but i have had pets and yes i was sad when they died. But an ANIMAL, not a human, that none of us had any relationship with died, other than betting on and trying to make $. I just don't consider an animal dieing tragic, nor are they athelets.

I have not shed a tear over the loss of Barbaro, but in Lexington, many people have. People really develop relationships with these thoroughbreds (whether that is reasonable are not is for the individual to decide).

I have known people that have attachments to animals, houses, and cars, and have grieved when they die, or are sold. It is just part of the human experience of grief.

I hear ya, by-the-way I love the "I'm your Huckleberry" quote, great movie. I did cry however when the Honky Tonk Man left the WWF, great picture.

Horses are absolutely athletes. You should quit speaking of things you know nothing about.

These horses are bred for humans and die for humans. It's sad. Also, I would rather someone like Maurice Clarett die than a horse than caused nobody pain.
