Barnes: Fulkerson nowhere near peak of his potential

I remember this, one of my favorites that I remember was people saying that Fulkerson would never be a starting post in the SEC. Only ever be a role player guy off the bench.
Quite a few said this, but only those that can predict the future.

Fulk's progression makes me happy and is a testament to Barnes' ability to identify talent and coach kids to their potential.

I used to cringe when Full went into the game. He made a lot of uncoordinated laughable plays. Now I feel like he can potentially score on every possession.

Agreed. A lot of people want to jump in head first with vitriol towards those who questioned Fulk's future as a rSO, and some were definitely over the top and making irrational determinations out of frustration. But truth be told, he was pretty awful, at times, and deserving of much of the criticism he received.

His turnaround is extremely fortunate and his accolades well-deserved. No logical person watched him in 2017-18 and 2018-19 and could have predicted what he did this past season with any level of confidence.

NBCSports college basketball writer Rob Dauster joined the GoVols247 Podcast this week and spent more than a half-hour breaking down the reason he’s higher than most about Tennessee junior guard Yves Pons as an NBA prospect and the reasons he believes Tennessee could be the SEC’s best teams next season.

Fulkerson was one of those reasons. “And then there’s John Fulkerson,” Dauster said. “I mean, that guy legit turned into an All-SEC big man. Over, like, the last month of the season, how many guys in that conference were better than him? How many big guys were better than him? Maybe Reggie Perry? Maybe Nick Richards? Was there any anybody else? He’s so efficient.”

...“It doesn’t make any sense that he’s that good,” Dauster said. “He certainly does not look the part. When you see his hair kind of waving in his face during the game, you don’t think, ‘Oh, yeah, that guy, he’s gonna go put up 27 points in Rupp Arena.’ I love him for that, by the way. You’ve got to love guys like that.”
Fulkerson's inexplicable success part of the charm, per analyst

Vols' highest player efficiency ratings in SEC play over past decade:

31.1: Grant Williams 2018-19
28.7: Jarnell Stokes 2013-14
25.8: Jarnell Stokes 2012-13
24.1: John Fulkerson 2019-20 & Grant Williams 2016-17
23.8: Scotty Hopson 2010-11
23.7: Jeronne Maymon 2011-12
23.6: Kevin Punter 2015-16
22.9: Tobias Harris 2010-11
22.3: Grant Williams 2017-18

Yep, I think Fulk senior year could be like Grant’s junior year too when you look at how much he improved

Both were massively underrated

Fulkerson will be the number one option next season with Pons the 2nd option and JJJ option number 3.

Fulkerson has a very good chance of being a mid round NBA pick in the first round and Pons will most likely go early in the 2nd round.
You have to add Springer in that mix.

That was a good call especially since JF had such rotten luck his Frosh season with injuries.
Not that I think they’d turn him away, but I count them as 2 over the scholarship limit...however Smart, Days and Watford could all leave for the NBA so hard to tell.

It was only awful because the kid had 3 different, severe injuries and was never able to get in good enough shape AND rhythm to beat out Grant Williams and Alexander out of the post. I know it’s beaten like a dead horse, but that game Fulkerson had against UNC was great. He showed athleticism, hustle, determination and a feel for the game - it was a matter of time till we saw that same Fulkerson again.

Jarnell was so underrated. Loved watching him play.

If he's able to take his game to another level and add 20-25 lbs of good weight, Fulky will be 1st team all S.E.C. next year. Proud of him for the strides he made this year. GB🍊
TBH, not so sure he shouldn't have been on it this year.
