Baseball short list

Corbin would laugh at the offer, he knows that he could never have the success here that he does at Vandy.

Yep and the reason for that is .........

As discussed many times before, the short answer:

Vanderbilt has a financial aid program that pretty much guarantees that any student accepted to the University will be able to afford to attend, regardless of their family's financial status. And their program is very generous. Technically, Corbin could recruit lower income athletes and have them all on a near full financial aid scholarship. State schools do not typically have an endowment that allows them to do this and the political environment of a state school would certainly not allow athletes to have preferential admission and also give them hordes of financial aid.

The best example is David Price, he was a walk-on and received academic and need based scholarships from Vanderbilt. He basically got a full-ride (which no State School can match very easily) and it didn't count against the 11.7 scholarship rule mandated from the NCAA.

I have no sour grapes towards Vanderbilt, I was just issuing facts on why Corbin would never leave there and come here....

EDIT: and the term "need based" does not necessarily mean low income. A family can live quite well and still receive "need based" money from Vanderbilt. Being a private institution, transparency is not needed........

From a 2012 article written by Aaron Fitt: "They've got that incredible financial aid office—they're dealing with about 30 scholarships," says another SEC coach.

While I didn't expect that we'd get to Omaha in 3 years, I did expect to make the SEC tournament by the end of year 3. The needle hasn't moved an inch, if at all.

A few guys that I think would work:

One thing about Serrano is that he's a West Coast guy. I question the regional fit for him. It may be a case of square peg/ round hole. Some of the guys that I think have a better regional connection to the area:

Monte Lee from the College of Charleston: he's a Ray Tanner guy, so he learned from one of the best.

Mervyl Melendez from Alabama State. Big time recruiter.

Casey Dunn.

The first call you make is to Dan McDonnell at UofL and you make an offer that he can't refuse.

:eek:lol:

Why don't we back the brinks truck up to Corbin's house too.

:lolabove: at myself, not you BG.

The time window for McDonnell has likely passed with UofL moving to the ACC. That move, opens his program up to a different level of recruits from more geographies as well. There's not much incentive to move on now. If a change is ever made, you have to at least inquire.

I just took a look at the remaining schedule. Four series with (are you ready?), A&M, Arkansas, MSU, and Carolina. Each of those teams are better by orders of magnitude than the Kentucky team that embarrassed and swept the Vols. Oh, there's three games with directional type schools thrown in, but after the MTSU disaster, the Vols don't get any easy outs. If the Vols play the rest of the season like they did in Lexington, this is shaping up as a 1960 Mets type disaster. I thought Serrano was the man, and after taking the series with Ole Miss and the first Mizzou game, I was excited. Since then, its been 0-6, and outscored 12-32. Its distinctly possible that the Vols might not win another game this year. Let that happen, or anything close, and the program will become a joke on the order of what Vandy football used to be. We'd be lucky to get Todd Raleigh to take back over.

MS State has a worse RPI than we do. If UGA or Auburn continue to struggle, the last series at home vs. MS State could be for the 12 seed at Hoover.

NCAA looks out of reach but the SEC tourney is still realistic.

I know not everyone will agree that we should be having this conversation yet but it’s a message board full of opinions and in my opinion Dave Serrano has had plenty of time. So with that being said lets talk replacement candidates. Disclaimer this is not an actual list just for discussion only.

Chris Burke- His name came up last go around and he’s the hometown favorite so I’ll put him at the top.
Chris Burke (baseball) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gary Gilmore- Costal Carolina, I think his accomplishments there speak for themselves but I’m not so sure that he would leave because it is his alma mater. 25 Seasons as a Head Coach: 1,006-501-2

Jim Toman- Liberty University, he’s a Ray Tanner disciple and has done wonders at Liberty. Now some would say he’s got it made at Liberty and he does but I think he’s ready for a bigger challenge and a return to the SEC. The Flames have notched a 187-108-1 overall record during his five seasons on Liberty Mountain and have also posted an 82-43 Big South mark over the span. His .664 conference winning percentage is also the best of any head coach in program history.

Dave Heefner- Dallas Baptist, Dan Heefner enters his eleventh season with the Dallas Baptist Baseball Team and eighth year as the Patriots’ Head Coach. Recognized by Baseball America in 2013 as one of the Top 10 Coaches in College Baseball under the age of 40, Heefner begins the 2015 season as the 35th winningest active coach in NCAA Division I College Baseball with a career record of 256-153 (.626 win percentage).

Mark Scalf- UNCW, In 2014, Mark Scalf’s 23rd season at the lead of the program, UNCW posted its 16th consecutive season with a winning record (30-27, 10-8 CAA) and competed in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament for a 29th time. The Seahawks are the only program to play in all 29 CAA tournaments. Scalf also became the first coach in the CAA to surpass the 300-win mark in conference action.

I would add Ash Lawson

It's a year too early for this discussion.
However, when compiling a list, it's worth remembering that every coach hired in the SEC in the last five years has either taken a team to the CWS or been promoted from within on a team that has been there.

Jewett(Vandy)

Thompson(miss state)

These Figure into this CWS thinking. Would be very similar to when O'sullivan was hired at Florida.

Say you're right, and by some miracle, the Vols make Hoover. Do you see anything but an extension of the embarrassment of this season? I'm not calling for Serrano's head (not yet anyway), but man, I never dreamed this was where we'd be three years into his tenure.

This is year 4.

No, not really.
Just saying 12th place even now wouldn't take a miracle when several other teams are also struggling.

Honestly, Hoover ought to be a given every year. It was a valid yardstick of team accomplishment when only 8 of 12 SEC teams could go to Hoover and it was even possible to make an NCAA regional without going to Hoover. Now that 12 of 14 make it, not making it is serious black mark.
