Maybe You'all should bring Buzz back since he did such a great job of bringing in the elite talent. Shut Up!!

Thats more top 150 talent that has been interested in UTK in many years. Never during Buzz's tenure. Also, the number of 150 players interested in UTK will probably grow more than it is right now. Its really still very early for Pearl to have that much interest, as the year goes on and the season starts and Pearl has more time on the recruiting trial I bet there are at least 2 or 3 more players on this list that show interest in UTK. Remember its basketball, not football, all we need it 2 of these players to make a good class. 3 would be gravy.

sorry guys for being a downer i guess until pearl starts the season ill shut up and let him at least have chance

Starts the season? Oh ok I see now, if he doesn't come out and win the SEC with weak talent left over from Buzz then he's a failure! Just as I thought! If you can't give the man 2 or 3 years then I'm thru talking to someone that obviously don't know squat!

Dont worry about Bruce or his recruiting
He is gonna do just fine and will develop players very well also

For the first time in my life, I am just as excited for basketball season to get here as I am football. I just wish Pearl could get his first really big verbal commit so that the big orange snowball can start rolling down from the Summit of Rocky Top!

We are quick to forget that Pearl made it to the Sweet 16 last season with a group of players that I guarantee you NONE were "Top 150" according to rivals. The improvement that most people are not counting on is that Pearl will make the players that we do have the best players they can be. He will be able to get them to reach their full potential and work hard. I think that was Buzz's biggest shortcoming during his tenure...he didn't "develop" his players. Buzz had a number of players with talent, but they didn't develop under his system. The players we have will definately "develop" under Pearl's system.

I've heard he had a good time, but I don't know details.

And, for the love of God, please don't use Rivals' basketball rankings. Choose Dave Telep's at ScoutHoops.com or Brick Oettinger's at PrepStars.com instead.

Here's a piece I did on another board about the various rankings and services (and, of course, this was written before I knew of VolNation's existence):

http://mb7.scout.com/fgridscapefrm2.showMe...1.topic&index=6

Basketball recruiting reference:

Here's what I use. These sites are a great reference for me when I can't get out and see the kids myself:

http://scouthoops.scout.com

Dave Telep is recognized by college coaches as the best in the business these days. His scouting service (which we don't have access to as non-coaches) is the most subscribed-to out there. I don't always agree with his rankings, but nobody sees more kids than Dave does. Plus, he's a genuinely great guy.

http://www.prepstars.com

Brick Oettinger has been doing this as long as anybody (longer than Bob Gibbons) and has a good eye for talent. That being said, his support team of Rob Harrington and Eric Bossi are experienced, knowledgeable, and as good as anyone out there when it comes to identifying talent (and, I'll admit, close friends and colleagues of mine). They cover a tremendous number of events, and the program profiles are particularly helpful. In the interest of full disclosure, I'll tell you that I worked for PrepStars during much of my college tenure and continue to do work for them from time to time. The site is worth the subscription (particularly if you get the print version of the Handbooks, too).

Rob Harrington also does a national column for USAToday on basketball recruiting, which can be found here:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/col...stars-index.htm

http://rivalshoops.rivals.com

The Rivals guys have come a long way since the days of Mike Sullivan. While their rankings aren't (in my opinion) all that good, and their self-promotion can be sickening at times (like writing stories to toot their own horn for being the first to rank Gerald Green #1 in the class of 2005, or having a great unveiling for their new rankings, full of fanfare), nobody beats them for pure volume of stories. Justin Young is truly one of the "good guys" in the business and Jerry Meyer does have a good eye for talent when he doesn't let his ego get in the way.

There are also certain school-related sites that, generally, provide a greater volume of basketball recruiting content on the Scout and Rivals networks. I make it a point to check them daily (with preferred writers in parentheses):

InsideCarolina (Ben Sherman, Jeff Goodman, Eric Bossi): http://northcarolina.scout.com

Phog.net (Eric Bossi): http://kansas.scout.com

Inside Indiana (Mike Pegram): http://indiana.rivals.com

Inside the Ville (Mike Hughes): http://louisville.scout.com

VolQuest (Brent Hubbs, Rob Lewis): http://tennessee.rivals.com

I'll also offer this advice: Don't just use the databases to try and find information. Because they're so voluminous, they aren't updated all that often. Instead, focus on reading stories, familiarizing yourself with player names, and, especially, keeping up with event coverage. That's where you really get to read about how certain players are performing.

Focus on learning to read between the lines and not take praise/criticisms of players literally. What I mean is, take a comment and think about how that translates onto the court at the high school level while considering that most writers (myself included) attempt to be gentle when criticising high school kids and that all praise is relative to the high school level. No matter how good a kid sounds, its all relative to other high school players, not college/NBA players, unless specifically mentioned (and that's rare).

One more thing... When in doubt, Google a player's name. Sometimes you won't find much, but often you'll find fairly good coverage through local newspapers, etc.

Now you all know all of my secrets...;)

Ok, just one more--on choosing a network:

I know that a lot of people out there subscribe to both the Scout and Rivals networks, but for those trying to make a decision, here are some guidelines:

If all you care about is hoops, I think that Scout is well ahead of Rivals on quality, even if it doesn't churn out stories at the rate that Rivals does.

I do recognize, though, that many are looking for both football and basketball coverage, and that's where it gets difficult. I think Rivals' football coverage is probably ahead of Scout's, and when it comes to Tennessee, there's little denying that VolQuest does a better job overall than RTN (sorry guys, I can't hide the truth).

So ultimately, it's a matter of what is most important to you. If basketball is #1, pick Scout. If football is more important, pick Rivals.
