TENNESSEE UNDERCLASSMEN

A skilled power forward in the 2010 class, Cody Henegar of Marion County (Tenn.) High School has the attention of college coaches.

Henegar, who registered a triple-double with 18 points, 23 rebounds and 11 blocks on Friday night, holds an early offer from Middle Tennessee. He performed well at the Tennessee elite camp and has had a few visitors this fall, including Alabama and Richmond. He also has had calls from Virginia and Kentucky.

Sophomore Kedren Johnson of Marshall County (Tenn.) High School is a big point guard to watch. During the weekend he put up 30 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists against Giles County, Tyler Smith's old high school.

Jon Hood and Drew Kelly, former travel team teammates on the Nashville Celtics, went against each other over the weekend. Hood scored 27 points, but it wasn't enough for his team to overcome the 47 points scored by Kelly - who is a Miami University signee.

Memphis is going to struggle to win close games if Tyreke Evans takes shots like he is playing in the McDonald's All-American Game.

Vanderbilt has a promising freshman in Jeff Taylor. He is on another level athletically than anything Vanderbilt has had recently, and he plays with a terrific motor. Besides his play around the rim, Taylor also gives Vanderbilt ball-handling from the forward position and a multiposition defender. If Taylor - who is averaging 13.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists - can develop range on his jump shot, he is a definite NBA prospect.

Like many of the prospects in the 2008 class, Tennessee freshman Scotty Hopson is trying to figure out the college game. Cameron Tatum is digging into Hopson's minutes. If Hopson's shot isn't falling, there isn't much he offers the Vols at this point.

Im looking foward to the 09 class. I like the 08 class, but it is miles away from the 07 class of freshman. Season is still young and only time will tell how these guys work out.

We need to get Hopson more looks somehow.

I thought the same thing too. But when you think about it in Pearls offense there is no excuse not get open looks.
I think he needs to work his way around the defense. Or he could do something that many 5* recruits do and that is create there own shot.

Scotty has excellent athleticism to be as tall as he is and has a really good shot. He obviously needs to work on other areas of his game to get more looks and more minutes. I know he hasn't started off as well as some of us would like, but he will end up being a very, very good basketball player.

I just want to see Hopson be more aggressive and not settle for 3s. He has an athletic advantage over almost everybody he goes up against. He needs to focus more on slashing to the basket and dishing off to the open man or getting to the foul line. This whole team is too focused on running around on the perimeter until somebody throws up a 3. Our offense gets bogged down because we don't spread the floor in the half court. Our bigs need to get lower on the post to open up space for the shooters or for Tyler to slash towards the basket.

I think Woolridge is the most rounded of the freshmen to be honest.

I think Woolridge does nothing but stand on the perimeter and hunt 3-point shots. Not good defense. Not good rebounder, esp considering his size. Never looks to go inside or slash to the basket. Rarely even dribbles. I dont mean any of that to signify that he is not talented. I think he has quite a bit of upside. But he is not well-rounded. All of our freshman are talented but they all need to do tons of work to develop all the areas of their game.

To be honest, Negedu is probably the most well rounded. Decent defender, high energy, gets boards, can score a little bit in the post if he has to, and is a solid passer.

He's not really great at anything yet, but he at least does a little bit of everything.

Also, is it just me, or does Woolridge take some awful shots that somehow manage to go in? His luck can't keep on forever..

Negedu is a tremendous athlete that plays very hard. His offensive rebounding and defense are solid at this point. But he has very little offensive game. And no offensive game at all outside of 5 feet from the basket. But I love his potential because he plays so hard and you cant teach that. If Hopson played as hard as Negedu does then he would have a starting job locked down.

Yeah, his offense game isn't great now, but it seems like he goes up stronger with the ball than any other post player we have.

Scotty, along with a lot of the younger players have to learn how to defend @ the college level. Your offensive game will work it self out through out the season. Our defense is 2 steps behind any of Pearls previous teams here. We beat people with less talent on our side, by turning them over and getting easy baskets. This team is not doing that right now.

Cody's dad is die hard Alabama. I go to all the Marion County games and he is a talent. I went to the game against Hixson Tuesday (12/16) and he really was the key in that game. Reps from Alabama and Richmond were at the game. Hope he doesn't go to Bama.

Scotty Hopson is a failure at this point. He reminds me a lot of Chris Donald at this point. He was the big fish in the small pond in high school and now he is at the bottom of the totem pole an he can't adapt.

I hope he can figure it out. He needs to make himself shots like good players do. You can't sit on the 3 point line and shoot moon balls all day. He needs to cut inside and break down the zone.

he's averaging 9 points a game as a freshman. He'll be fine. People are expecting WAY too much at this point in the season.
