Can't believe I am posting this.

As a exclusive football fan for years I never paid much attention to basketball... Except for the Jordan years as a kid.

I'm making a real effort to get into Vol basketball and I am actually enjoying watching it after I got through the first few games.

I'm finding that basketball is not the easiest sport to keep up with. Football is slow, even uptempo games are slow by comparison. Basketball= offense, defense, offense, defense, offense, defense....and by now about 45 seconds is off the clock. LOL.

So to the point.... I hear a lot of things being said that I do not know.

* Free throws- typically you get two shots, that count one point each... If you are fouled.
- question.... Sometimes they only get one free throw.. Why?

* why do some fouls = a free throw, and some times they throw the ball in from the side?

* how do you call basketball plays?

* defense... What's a 1-2-3? Heard them talk about that during the Bama game last night. How about other defensive schemes?

* why are the coaches dressed like baptist preachers?

I think I get the three point shots and the other basics.... Hopefully, that will help me get a better understanding of this game.

Thanks!

Free Throws: You get two if fouled in the process of shooting. If you make the shot anyways, you only get one shot. If you are fouled while not in the act of shooting, you simply take it out of bounds.

Defense: All we ever seem to play is man to man. Cuonzo is too stuborn for anything else. There is a 2-3 zone, 1-2-2, etc. This is simply the way the players are aligned.

Dress: No idea.

Free throws you always get 2 unless the fouled player makes the shot. Then he gets 1 free throw. It's a 3 point play or can be a 4 point play if he's fouled at the 3 point line and makes the shot. Sometimes you see a player shoot one and miss, and the other team rebounds it. That's called a one and one and you shoot those when the other team has 7 fouls. When the other team has 10 fouls you shoot 2 no matter what until the half is over. They inbound the ball from the sides though when a foul is committed where the fouled player isn't attempting a shot. But if the teams in the bonus, they shoot free throws anyways.

There's several defensive schemes. 2-3 zone is you have 2 guys defending the middle corners, and a guy In the very middle under the basket, and 2 guys at the top guarding the 3 point line. And of course there's man to man. You typically run this on teams with good inside post players. 3-2 defense is the opposite. 3 guys guarding the 3 point line 2 down low you usually use it for teams with good outside shooting. There's more defensive schemes but those are a couple of the basics.

Ok.

1. If a player is fouled while in the act of shooting, he is granted two free throws, unless the shot goes in. In that case, the player is granted the points scored and one free throw.

2. Each team is allowed 6 fouls before sending the other team into the "bonus". At the 7th foul, the other team is allowed to shoot a "one-and-one". That means that he shoots one free throw. If he misses, the teams play the miss and rebound. If he hits, he gets another free throw. At 10 team fouls, the other team can shoot two free throws, regardless of whether the player hits or misses the first shot.

3. The point guard typically calls plays, and it's normally under the direction of the coach. The point guard typically will use a hand signal and call the name of the play out.

4. Coaches just normally dress up in basketball. It's just proper etiquette.

5. I have no clue what a 1-2-3 is. Normally, numbers represent the type of zone that is being played, but the sum of those numbers equals 5, for the number of players on the floor. Like a 2-3 zone means two players play up front around the top of the key, and the other three play around the goal.

6. If you were just trolling, good job on baiting me into this.

Not sure this is helping.

You never played or watched basketball, even as a kid?

I watched Jordan and the Bulls...that wasn't really watching basketball...that was watching Jordan. Other than those few finals, nope... I never watched more than a few quarters here and there.

Never played organized basketball... I did shoot horse a time or three.

No trolling, it was a serious post.

I played football and baseball..... Just trying to get into basketball now... My son is into it so it's something we can watch together. I just need to understand it more.

Thanks for those who answered, that helps me a lot. I'm already understanding better.

If you want to try to understand basketball, don't watch this Tennessee team.

Yea, I don't fully get all the why, but when I hear the current men's coach being referred to as Dooley 2.0.....I fully get what the current men's coaching situation is.

It is odd for me to see smaller schools (in the Football sense) who are powerhouses in basketball. So I am watching pretty much all the basketball I can right now. Watched Bama get beat last night. Good stuff.

Since a couple people have answered your questions, I'll just say welcome to the sport. Try to catch an Arizona game, they are fun to watch.

I personally think we would do better with the 1-2-3 as stated in original question. We could use the extra man
