Comic-Con: Kenny Johnson Upped to Series Regular & Nicola Peltz Returns To ‘Bates Motel’

Revealed today at A&E’s Comic-Con panel for Bates Motel is that season 3 will dive more into the story of Norma’s brother, Caleb, as Kenny Johnson is made a regular on the show. Also, executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin revealed that posh damsel in distress Bradley (Nicola Peltz) — aka the girl who Norman will do anything for — will be returning. “There’s a huge revelation for Norman as he realizes he can do these terrible things,” said Cuse. For the most part the EPs were tight-lipped about major storylines for season 3. Of note, we’ll learn more about Sheriff Romero’s backstory.

Rather than treat the crowd to season 3 spoilers, panel organizers found it amusing to have members of the audience arm wrestle Johnson since he’s a champion in the raw sport. The Bates Motel panel featured a couple of silly clips: an Arrested Development-like opening credits sequence for the series as well as a number of offbeat, unhinged auditions of the actors, which are to be featured on the season 2 DVD. Sitting on the Comic-Con panel were Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore, Olivia Cooke, Nestor Carbonell and Johnson.

Ryan Hurst (Sons Of Anarchy, Remember the Titans) has joined the cast of A&E’s Bates Motel as a recurring guest star. He’ll play Chick Hogan, who owns a motorbike shop in town, but gets his money running an illegal firearms business from his property near Dylan’s new farm. He’s set for a six-episode arc. Hurst, repped by Domain and Piper Kaniecki Management, was a series regular on TNT’s King & Maxwell. His film credits include CBGB and Rango.

Bates motel serves as a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film, psycho, and promises to give viewers an intimate portrayal of how norman bates’ psyche unravels through his teenage years.

This season focuses on the evolution of the Bates family and dives head first into Norman’s waning ability to stay in denial about what’s happening to him and the lengths he will go to gain control of his fragile psyche. The dramatic events of last season leaves Norma (Vera Farmiga) reluctantly more aware of Norman’s mental fragility and is fearful of what he is capable of.

After a blissful summer of closeness with his mother, living within the safe confines of home and the Bates Motel, Norman’s fears about what really happened with Blaire Watson resurface and Norma questions what really happened. Forced to look at the truths about Norman for the first time, their deeply intricate relationship continues to evolve. Norma finds herself turning to the other man in her life, Norman’s half-brother, Dylan and begins to rely on him in ways that she never expected. This relationship inevitably triggers jealousy in Norman and a new kind of love triangle between Norma and her two sons erupts.

Estranged brother and uncle, Caleb returns to haunt the family throughout the season challenging the family bond even further. Pressures of the outside world take a hold of the family when newcomers Kevin Rahm (“Mad Men,” “Desperate Housewives”), Tracy Spiradakos (“Revolution”) and Ryan Hurst (“Sons of Anarchy”) arrive at White Pine Bay. After a summer of living at the Bates Motel, Sheriff Romero and Norma have grown closer but there will always have that troubling question mark surrounding Norman. Something doesn’t feel right, but in-spite of his instincts, Romero finds himself continually drawn back to the Bates family – and to Norma. Emma, also determined to find out what is happening to Norman, becomes more emboldened, fearless, goes after the things she wants. Familiar face Bradley returns to surprise the family and digs up old memories.

In this sneak peek behind the scenes of season three, watch as the cast and creators discuss this season's emergence of the Norman Bates we all know and love (and fear):

The one that's inbred seems to be the most normal.

No doubt. Emma too minus the breathing problem. Its like the characters with the obvious and/or physical problems are much better off than the ones with mental problems, which is pretty much everyone else lol
