Baylor got the nation’s attention on Saturday by torching West Virginia 73-42, but the Bears have been doing that all season long. We set out to come up with five key stats that explain just how good this offense is, but like Baylor, we just couldn’t help ourselves and came up with a lot more points.

1. Petty’s monster start

The list of Bryce Petty stats is a long one, so here we go. He’s No. 1 in the country in yards per attempt (14.65) and yards per completion (20.12). He’s best in FBS in raw QBR (98.1) and opponent-adjusted QBR (97.7). He leads the Big 12 in completion percentage and touchdown passes.

He’s averaging 52.1 yards on his 10 touchdown passes. He’s No. 94 in FBS in pass attempts per game at 22. He’s picked up a first down on 50 of 67 completions. He’s gaining an average of 18.9 yards on his first-down completions. On third downs, he’s 12-for-14 passing with an FBS-best 22.8 yards per attempt. He’s picking up 10 or more yards on 73 percent of his completions. Oh, and he’s thrown one interception and taken one sack.

2. When Petty doesn’t play

Take a look at all the time Petty has missed. The fact he’s yet to appear in a fourth quarter this year is impressive. Petty has been pulled with roughly 24, 26, 28 and 19 minutes left in Baylor’s games. That means Petty has been benched for 41.5 percent of Baylor games due to blowouts. He’s been pulled with a total of 99:39 in game time remaining, equivalent of more than 1.5 games. Excluding kneel-downs to end halves, Petty has played in 38 Baylor offensive drives and has sat out 22.

The most amazing stat to me is that he's only attempting 22 per game. If you'd have asked me that before reading this I'd have guessed 50

They're a damn good team and frankly, they might win the Big12. I'm not sure anyone else in the Cow12 can go score for score with them. Congrats BUBear. Your boys are looking pretty solid.

Right, they should call off the dogs and bench everyone after the first quarter strictly because they're forced to play in that crap conference.

Holy Christ I just defended Baylor. Time to take a shot of something 90 proof.

They're killing it because of who is on their schedule...Nobody...

This.

So what if they put 73 on Whitetrash Virginia U.

WVU vs. William and Mary - W 24-17
WVU vs. Maryland - L 39-0

Maryland vs. FSU - L 63-0

Pretty sure WVU would lose to Kentucky.

Baylor is good, but a defense with decent/good linebackers would give them fits. Oregon would murder them, as would the upper half of the SEC.

I think Art Briles is the most underrated coach in the NCAA. It doesn't matter who his QB, they put up numbers. Baylor is also a good team to bet on to cover the spread.

I wish we had been able to keep Lache Seastrunk. Regardless of what everyone was saying about his personality during his recruiting, he is an upstanding and supremely talented person and running back. I am happy he is having success at Baylor though.

Perceptions (pre-season polls) matter...

Team A: 111th toughest schedule so far Team B: 73rd toughest schedule so far

Who are they?

Bama's SOS will drop basically the rest of the year, preseason Baylor had a much higher SOS than both Oregon and Bama.

Unfortunately it's not a great system. If Boise State went undefeated with Bama's schedule the last couple of years they would not even be in the top 3. SOS only means something when you are not from the big conferences. It's about money.

2013 SEC strength of schedule through six weeks | Saturday Down South

Bama's SOS will drastically drop the rest of the season as really the only have one game left. So? It doesn't matter.

Bama will be lucky to be in the top half of the SOS in the nation, you think that effects their ranking? Not a chance. SOS is the excuse the big conferences have been using but it does not hold water to reality.

It's always about Bama's schedule with you.

Who are they?

Whether people like or not, history plays a part. Oregon has proven themselves. Baylor hasn't.

Why is the perception that the SEC is so good? Because people build it up. If UGA and Clemson were to finish the season with 1 loss each, who do you think would be ranked higher at the end of the season? If 'Bama were to lose to a top 10 team, how far would they fall? If Clemson loses to FSU, how far are they going to fall?

If and when Baylor goes and beats someone of note, things will change. Until someone goes and knocks of the SEC, they'll the be king of the hill.

On another point, if the ACC is going to rise, it has to be done this year. FSU, Clemson, Miami all get cracks at the SEC. Those are the 3 teams that will be carrying the ACC for the next decade.
