Six computer rankings calculated in inverse points order (25 for #1, 24 for #2, etc.) are used to determine the overall computer component.

Well, that computer component is just working great. I mean, I don't see any wrong with the average computer rankings...

1. USC
2. Michigan
3. Ohio State
4. Florida
5. Auburn
6. Cal
7. Notre Dame
8. Arkansas
9. Rutgers
10. Louisville
11. Boise State
12. Tennessee

Because it gives an advantage to tough conferences such as the SEC. THEY DON'T WANT THAT! They want small teams from the MAC, or C-USA to have a chance to play for a title...

or teams such as CAL.....

I don't mind not having SOS. As dumb as that seems, the way they do SOS is strange, and seems to favor the big 12.

They should really scrap the computer system, or at least keep them from being so far off.

The AP poll was dropped a few years ago. Heres the BCS explained vis ESPN.com

Team percentages are derived by dividing a team's actual voting points by a maximum 2850 possible points in the Harris Interactive Poll and 1575 possible points in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Six computer rankings calculated in inverse points order (25 for #1, 24 for #2, etc.) are used to determine the overall computer component. The best and worst ranking for each team is dropped, and the remaining four are added and divided by 100 (the maximum possible points) to produce a Computer Rankings Percentage. The six computer ranking providers are Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin, and Peter Wolfe. Each computer ranking accounts for schedule strength in its formula.

The BCS Average is calculated by averaging the percent totals of the Harris Interactive, USA Today Coaches and Computer polls.

Yes, I know the AP was dropped. That post you quoted was a story about previous years explaining why they dropped the SOS component. Thanks though for making sure everyone has the right info, the BCS isn't the easiest thing to follow.

I just made a excel spreedsheet of the rankings and man are they all over the place. I wanted to be able to see each computer poll and the actual name of the team in each spot. One poll will have a team 3 and the next poll will be 22 and the next 10. Its about as exact as having a computer pick the winning lotto numbers. Computers just isn't gonna get it correct. Aside from a playoff system I don't see it ever being even close, but this is only the first week of the BCS. We will see.

SOS was dropped because they felt that it counted too heavily since all the computer rankings have SOS within their rankings.

Also why they dropped the quality win factor, because the computers already have that stuff.

I'm not saying either one was right to remove, that's just how it was explained when they took those out.

or better yet, we could scrap the entire non-sensical BCS system, and play a playoff like every other sport in a america does.

why have the teams play to determine who is the best? Let's let computers and coaches polls decide that.

i playoff system has to happen, and i'm beginning to become more optimistic since even the media is starting to turn against BCS.

Yeah. I mean, look at last year. Georgia was a GREAT national champion for a few weeks... Until they got housed by a couple freshmen on a Big East squad.

In fact, all the "national champions" have looked great. Is there a reason the SEC champs are only one game above .500 in bowl games since divisional play, or are they just too busy admiring their "national championship" to play a football game?

SEC finsihes usually finishes the bowl season with the best conference record, along with having the most teams qualifying for bowls.
