BCS v Playoff

Think about if we had a BCS-style championship for basketball... It would have been Ohio State and Kansas tonight. Yuck.
It's probably better than what we had, even if you don't like the teams.

Either way, It doesn't need to just be two teams. It just doesn't need to be 68.

It blows BCS out the box, it at least would of given TCU a shot and Boise the yr before.
A 4 team playoff, which I would definitely prefer, would have given TCU a shot.

Bama was simply the best team in 2009.

I don't understand why people whine about the number 3 team not getting a shot and then saying that a 16 team playoff is perfect. 4 solves the issue in just about every year and doesn't ruin the regular season.

Same, I'd be fine with 32. But it won't ever go backwards.

An 8 team playoff would be ideal. 6 BCS conference champs and 2 at large bids. Use the four BCS bowls as the first round. Use BCS rankings for seeding purposes. Unfortunately even if they do finally change from the current system they would probably mess it up and let 16 or 32 teams play in it

The BCS is very close to getting it right. It isn't perfect but the current formula can be tweaked to make it better. I think most of the problems with the BCS can be fixed by increasing the weight percentage given to strength of schedule in the formula....which will force teams to play a decent schedule through the regular season. Adding a playoff just caters to the the TCUs, the Boise Sts, and the Utahs of the NCAA that refuse to play competitive teams during the regular season. Adding a playoff won't change that, it will just make the pathway harder for teams that do play respectable schedules.

You missed your own point. What if TCU did schedule a tougher schedule and they ousted AU or Oregon then your stuck with exact same problem. Say TCU beat AU then hey their not NC because they didn't play Oregon. Playoff is needed period.

Why do people act like college football's playoff needs to be as small as possible? Of all of the major sports leagues in America, college and pro, college football is the absolute WORST sport to have such an exclusive playoff. The sample size is so small, the top ranked teams have basically no common opponents, and teams from the top conferences are penalized tremendously based on who they have to play. How can you draw a legitimate interpretation from that.

Nothing wrong at all with an 8 team playoff. If the 8 seed wins it all, they've earned it. They aren't "mediocre" like Villanova in '85. The national champ having one more loss than the #1 seed is hardly inexcusable if they've won a playoff.

I say 8 teams, and maybe 16. There is no way a ranking system can accurately give you the best team in a 4-team playoff. Look how often in the NFL a non-top 4 team wins the Super Bowl, and that's with teams playing basically even schedules. NCAA teams do not play even schedules in the least bit.

I love the NCAA tournament for the fact that it is so much fun to watch. Anybody can win on any given night. The BCS can rot in hell.

There's a big difference between what's fun and what's the best way to determine a champion.

Regardless, it's pretty obvious in college football that there are certain teams ahead of the pack every year. There's no need to include 8 teams.
