Becky Hammon Vs Kara Lawson.. vols Assistant coach

KL has it made where she is. 0 headaches and 0 hassle from fans. She is good at what she does now, and I'm sure she would be a decent assistant coach.

I would love to see what she could do here. At the end of the day it's about what she wants to do.

With the team we have this year a 12 or 14 loss would be very bad. I believe only 1 or 2 this year.

I wanna be optimistic, but we have same forward line returning ..... and we have to replace the losses in personnel.... a bunch of freshmen....

Don't want to be pessimistic, but I am realistic nonetheless..... I see a similar season, unless a guard or two has a unfreshmanlike freshman season. ....

If Holly has any sense she's going after Melanie Balcomb and it's not even really a question.

I am certain that phone call has been made. However, she seems to enjoy the role that she has currently at South Carolina. It allows her a better quality of life and more time to spend with her young child.

I'm very optimistic because of the guard speed, that can over come mistakes, and Mercedes Russell will be much stronger. This will be the best Tennessee team since 2008.

The problem over the past several years has not been talent or experience. It's been chemistry, attitude, and effort. (And a few injuries.) Maybe those issues have been improved with the changes in player and coaching personnel, who knows? But if they haven't, I don't think we're going to see significant improvement on the court.

Hire Shea Ralph ASAP

Shea Ralph played for CT when the rivalry was strong and both programs loved nothing more than to beat the other. Knowing that, I would imagine that it would be impossible for her to even think about going over to the Orange Side. Her Husky blue blood would reject the air in Knoxville and she'd die.

Add this to the mix........ There are several assistant coaches out there that have an interest in the position at UT. But, just like we talk on here about the hot seat that CHW is perceived to be sitting on, they too are cautious to take a job at a school that if a turnaround is not immediate they could be out the door with the head coach.
I hope our coach does not repeat the past and simply wait to see who comes knocking on her door.

That would be a huge mistake. My hope is that someone really terrific wants the position -- someone respected and knowledgable enough that if Holly were to be let go in the next couple of years, could be next in line to be head coach.

A person like that could, obviously, bring instant positive change to the program and be the missing piece that gets the Lady Vols back to elite status.

Of course, if the program were to reach the Final Four in the next couple of years that would mean Holly's contract would likely be extended. That said, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Holly retired after just a few more years, either, leaving room for the next superstar assistant/associate head coach to step right into the lead role.

It's a dream worth having.

We would be looking at Becky Hammond to take Holly's place and we don't even have enough money to make that happen if we get to that point. Hammond will never be an Assistant coach in WBB she could have plenty of head coaching jobs if she wants ever wants one.
Kara want be coming either think ESPN analyst is a job she enjoys much more than the prospects of coaching and she makes a lot more money than an Assistant makes.

I expect us to stay with Holly no matter what kind of season we have

She was rewarded with extension couple of years ago... so i assume athletic admin is happy with program.

Its a whole new ballgame in town now that John Currie is in charge. Things that happened 1-2 years ago now are meaningless. That of course is not to say shes on the hot seat--I don't know what he thinks of her. DP, Jumper or HoopsDR might.

Well said.....

Having said this, a change at the top cannot come quickly enough for me. Good players or not, success in a program all starts with a competent HC, who can command respect and coach the game at a fundamental and understandable level....

Frankly, I'd be disappointed if she ever did decide to take an assistant job unless, of course, her contract was clear that she was interim assistant/head coach in waiting (if there could be such a thing).

I sure would enjoy seeing her one day get the top job for an NBA team, though. That may never happen, but I could understand her wanting to give the league her best shot before making the decision to take a college program on.

A significant thing also is "flow" in offense. No continuity, between players or the on the floor.

Everything mentioned above is mental.
Chemistry, attitude, effort...Flow.
This tells me that what's missing has to do with "mind" not body or soul.

I will be attending the UT picnic in Nashville. I will introduce myself there and maybe talk a little LV BB.

From what I have seen with Currie's entry so far, I think he may be, in the A.D. field, someone who isn't easily swayed or impressed.

You have to come with it to impress the new AD that is what the new baseball coach did....and when Currie checked out the background with others he made the hire

Ralph would be an outstanding get. Only problem is, why would she leave Connecticut where in 9 years she's never missed a Final Four to come coach for Holly? She's also perfectly positioned to take over for Geno in the next 5-10 years.

In the past she has been incredibly complimentary of Tennessee and Pat Summitt. Her mom played with Pat back in the 70s and Tennessee was a finalist before she chose Connecticut. I can't find it, but I do recall her once saying something along the lines of that she'd love her daughter to play for Pat one day....so I don't think there's really any animosity there for Shea, but overall it just doesn't make any sense for her to leave Connecticut for Tennessee unless she was getting a head coaching job.

why wait so long in Geno's shadow? How did that work out for Holly & Pat?

We have 2 guards from our last championship team who works out players individually and are great at it. One is a pure PG and the other is a combo guard. I think both would have the ability to recruit and guard has been our biggest weakness as of late. And one has the Alpha personality that Coach Jumper is talking about. If I am Holly, I am reaching out to Shannon Bobbit or Alexis Hornbuckle.

I believe both can relate to today's generation of players and would remind the team of what it is to be a Lady Vols in the modern era of basketball.

I'd also steal Alex Fuller (Simmons) from Ole Miss and bring her back home! She has been a solid recruiter and I think she would be a better Post Player coach than Dean! This would allow Dean to continue to do the game planning full time as it has been stated he does.

We need someone from outside the TN family, IMO. Which means no to Alex Fuller and no to Tasha Butts before someone mentions her. Neither one has proven that much as an assistant.

The only coach I'd take right now from within the family is McCray and obviously that isn't happening. Or possibly Tonya Edwards, who was the coach at Alcorn State and is now an assistant with the Sparks.

Right now I'd be throwing money at Balcolm and Gail G if she were to be interested in an assistant's position. Joy Cheek made a great name for herself at Ohio State but she has only been at Vanderbilt for a year so I doubt that is an option. Shannon Perry at UCLA would be a great hire, as she has proven to be a great recruiter at both UCLA and at Duke. I've seen Tina Thompson's name mentioned more than once. And has Amanda Butler found a job yet? She seemed to be a decent motivator at Florida -- seemed to have a trouble recruiting, though -- and is from Mt. Juliet.
