Do we have any beekeepers on Volnation?

Wanting to take up beekeeping

I have a large garden and assortment of fruit trees(pears, apples, peaches) and was looking to start a couple of hives

Plus, eating localized honey can help with allergies and I love eating it on a hot biscuit

If there are, any of you guys have any tips?

I've been thinking about this as well

I helped a friend yesterday put extra boxes on three of his new hives. There was about 50,000 bees in each hive. It was amazing that we never got stung and they hardly ever got close to stinging us.

I have always wanted to start it and yesterday just made me want start even more

I have a fairly large garden. I would love to add Bees and a chicken house. I have the property behind my house to support it but the Home Owners Association has sued home owners for less. There is no way they would approve it.

My grandfather did it for years and still may, I haven't been to visit in a few years. I can ask him about it

Screw home owners associations. Thats why I would never live in a subdivision

When introducing a new queen to the hive you pack the end of the shipping box with rock candy and spray the queen down with sugar water. The bees will eat the rock candy plug out of the shipping box and the queen will be accepted in the hive.

Don't have bee hives around any kind of large livestock. Realize that bees have colors that they like and dislike in your clothing (seriously). Don't neglect to use the smoker devices, that calms em down. Good luck.

Warning dumb question coming up.

What are the chances of killer bees converting your hives?

Correct.

Save the bees, CountVolcula!

From what I understand, a virus, sort of like the flu, is killing them in Tennessee right now.

It doesnt hurt live bees, but kills the undeveloped
bee

Its easy to treat, but you have to treat the hive. So its hard on wild bees

We have 8 hives we piddle with. My grandfather really enjoys working with them. There is a mite that will Ger on your bees and kill them out. We've lost several hives in the past due to them

I don't think that is a dumb question. I am a geographer who works with natural resources and I had to look up a map. If you are in Arkansas, Louisiana or Florida, you might should be concerned, but if in East Tennessee, you may be OK for a while.
