I have to say, the fans got hosed last night, that was insane waiting till 2:30 for it to end, and then they didn't even tell the fans over the PA

wake up race morning to rain. decide to head to the track any way and hang out. they get the track dry and start the race. it starts raining again. hang out and wait for them to dry the track again.

it sucks to be a fan at the race right now. i feel their pain.

It's happened to me at Atlanta twice.

I've had it happen at Bristol a few times, even had snow! My most memorable rain delay was at the 1972 Indy 500 on Pole Day qualifying. We sat in the rain all day, until about an hour before time was up, when the sun came out. There were even three tornados that passed within sight of the track. At that time if just one car made a complete run, the first day was over, the car was on the pole, and everyone else was now a second day qualifyer. The real bad deal was that we had to buy another ticket too. The track became dry with just enough time for one car to make a run, and it was A J Foyt. On his second lap his engine let go right in front of us in turn one. Everyone jumped up and cheered because we could now use our tickets for the next day.

A sad note, just as we sat down on Sunday, a car hit the wall right in front of us in turn 4, and the driver was killed. I cannot remember his name, he was not a regular Indy car driver. I knew he was dead as soon as the car came to a stop. His helmet was fractured! My wife didn't want to go to the 500 after seeing it, but we had spent the money, so she went.

It always rains on Pole Day at Indy. I can't even begin to count the number of rain delays I've sat (or slept) through at IMS.

had to get some help on that one. i was talking to my dad about it today and he recalled the same story.

i know what it's like to be at the track with tornadoes in the area too. i remember walking back to the car the year Buddy Rice won to the sirens going off. pretty crazy times. i think 3 or 4 touched down that day in the area.

The tornados went right through downtown Indianapolis, but didn't do as much damage as expected, no one was hurt.

That 1972 race was significant for something as far as the winning team, can you guess?

Yeah, the Penzke race car came a bit later. Gary Bettenhouse(sp) drove the other Penske entrant. He lost his ride because he refused to give up dirt racing with sprints and midgets. I was at the Action Track in Terra Haute when Gary flipped out of the park and was injured to where he couldnt drive at Indy, so Roger fired him. That's when Johnny Parsons, Jr nicknamed him "Schmucker".

Completely crushed his arm I think. There was a safety change that came out of it as well.

I don't remember his injuries, but his brother Merle had his arm torn off at Michigan when he tried to get out of the car while it was still moving and trapped his arm between the car and the wall. It was his first Champ car race.

Been rained out at Indy a couple times - once, the year Rahal won.

Last time, it happened both on Sunday and Monday (I sat through both).

On a positive note, it cuts down my beer drinking at the race mainly because the beer keeps filling up with rain water while I'm drinking it.

Your idea of positive and mine are 180 degrees out of sync. Drink faster, not less.

I have come to this position because my mind and body were 180 degrees out of sync with regard to beer drinking and unfortunately my body was always right :cray:
