On Vols calls, CBJ just said that Ja'wuan James told the younger players that when he was a freshman, he and the other OLs would just go in and "check off the boxes" on their lift cards and not actually lift weights. He regrets it now and realizes what a waste it was. He wishes he had another year or two to play at UT. What was Bennie Wylie doing while this was happening?

Interesting. Was he Dooleys first strength coach?

It showed on the field....our lines were pathetic strength and conditioning wise...some say that hasn't changed..I disagree with that

It also shows the commitment that James and the other players had. The difference between a good and a great player is the drive to work hard without being forced to do it.

Wylie was probably in the oxygen tent in his office. Lawson cares enough about his players to be there with them while they workout. Amazing to hear what went on during the Dooley era. No wonder.

Proud of James for saying that. Takes courage to say that, knowing he's going to get ripped by people. That's the past. Work hard every day!

People thought he was intense because he wore sweats in the summer. Too bad he wasn't more visible to the players. No wonder our teams seemed to fade in the 4th. They were not in the best shape.

Disagree as well. I like Lawson a lot. It hasn't been as obvious as the season's gone on, but there towards the beginning it was clear we were in better shape than some of our opponents despite our atrocious depth.

This story is a statement on the team culture under Dooley. As a freshman, James probably would have been ridiculed if he was the only guy to actually complete the workout. Not surprising that McKeefery had to come to blows with Da'Rick to get him to do the workouts. The evolution of the team culture will lead to wins.

That's why they sucked against Missouri! They didn't lift those weights 3 years ago!

I remember Darwin Walker lifting an unbelievable amount. I also remember Al Wilson and Jamal Lewis having a lift contest that eventually had to be put to a halt because it was getting dangerous. Hopefully our kids will be that competitive in the weight room like in those days.
