What're some other issues like this that happened during the Dooley era? Besides the Dooley era in general of course. I think it's just interesting to look back and see how far we've come in such a short amount of time.

That's why they sucked against Missouri! They didn't lift those weights 3 years ago!

Believe it or not, it actually is. The culture that was established here the past 4 years has a lot to do with why we suck in certain situations. Good try though.

On Vols calls, CBJ just said that Ja'wuan James told the younger players that when he was a freshman, he and the other OLs would just go in and "check off the boxes" on their lift cards and not actually lift weights. He regrets it now and realizes what a waste it was. He wishes he had another year or two to play at UT. What was Bennie Wylie doing while this was happening?

he's one of those people that go's to work every day and goof's off.then he gets paid and acts like he's done something.and he probably complained the most of any coach.

It showed on the field....our lines were pathetic strength and conditioning wise...some say that hasn't changed..I disagree with that

While there may be an improvement over the Dooley years in terms of culture among the team, the unfortunate reality is that each of those guys was infected with the wrong attitude. By O-line's play on the field, I believe some still have that attitude (or remnants of it).

It is so much easier for a coach (or manager) to teach them right when you first get them (as CBJ is doing with his 1st year guys) than retrain bad habits into good habits. This is also true in non-sports related occupations. For this reason, next year's O-line may not be that much worse than this years despite potential talent discrepancies.

Loads of truth in this...a lot of the best college units are a combination of the most talented and technically sound...but common denominator is conditioning and being experienced in the system...going to get better every year

I've been saying the same thing. They may not have NFL size or names, but I'd be wiling to bet they'll be just fine.

Collecting a nice fat paycheck, just like Dooley...

This story is a statement on the team culture under Dooley. As a freshman, James probably would have been ridiculed if he was the only guy to actually complete the workout. Not surprising that McKeefery had to come to blows with Da'Rick to get him to do the workouts. The evolution of the team culture will lead to wins.

McKeefery wasn't so great himself. It turns out that getting really big makes people slower.

So he was a Kiffen leftover and it's soley a testament to Dooley's team culure?? U do realize that Hammy made dooley keep guys on staff right?? He was gone after his first year. So it's not possible that he realized the guy was bad and dooley decided to go in a different direction?? Oh yeah of course all the jumping coaches were jumping off the ship and in no way could it have been Dooley cleaning house with a few. Smh.

didnt Vlad Richards break the bench record under Wylie or was that before? either way, it is ridiculous to sum up a strength coach by one comment from a player. Wylie ran and conditioned his players A LOT and the team competed for 4 Qtrs in games that year. i havent seen that since.

You're right.
Nothing was Dooley's fault.
Ever.

For the record: Aaron Ausmus was the S&C coach under Kiffin. Wylie and McKeefrey were under Dooley.

OK, I may be getting names confused because we've gone through so many coaches, but I thought Wylie was the guy who came in under Kiff and wouldn't let other athletes use the weight room, thought it was football's exclusively, Kiff warned him, wouldn't stop, so they 86'd him before season even started. Ausmus came in and was here for Kiff's season and Dooley's 1st, then jetted to SC?. enter Mckeefery. I may be missing someone, but that is the way I remember it in my fuzzy old-man brain, and I don't have the energy to research it for confirmation.

It also shows the commitment that James and the other players had. The difference between a good and a great player is the drive to work hard without being forced to do it.

No one has ever been forced to be great. They wanted to be the best on their own.
