Simply the best to ever wear the orange and white. One of the best basketball players ever to play the game. Long overdue!!

Maravich? Not disagreeing about King, but you said greatest pure scorer... so I say, Maravich?

And a lot of those points were from 3 point range before the 3 pointer was conceived. That was a heck of a college player.

Both were phenomenal, special players. But they numbers say Pete was a better pure scorer in college. That being said, I love me some Bernard King

College stats

King: 18.1 FG attempts per game
Maravich: 38.1 FG attempts per game (this is not a typo)

King: .590 FG%
Maravich: .438 FG%

This is not close. Unless Maravich gets credit for being a black hole who got to take almost 40 shots a game because he played for his dad on a bad team.

This story is best told by John Ward. But then what UT related story isn't?

On January 13,1975 a hard fought battle between TN and UK had just ended in Lexington with UK winning 88-82. It was Bernard King's Freshman season, and he had just experienced his first Kentucky game. He had scored 19 points and pulled in 6 rebounds while Ernie Grunfeld had led the team with 26 points and 13 rebounds. King had fouled out after 28 minutes of play.

As the VOLS left the floor for the locker room, a misguided Wildcat fan yelled out something disrespectful at King (what, I do not know) and flipped his lit cigarette into Bernard's hair from the stands. Kentucky apparently allowed smoking in their gym at that time, or at least after the game.

King tried to go after the dolt, but was restrained by the VOL staff.

A little later, in Tennessee's locker room, the press was allowed in to talk to the coaches, players, etc. A Lexington reporter started needling Bernard about the game. King, still miffed not only by having lost the game, but also by the way he was treated by one of UK's faithful, and now this reporter in his face blurted out in a loud voice something like, "I can tell you one thing. While I am at Tennessee, we will not lose to Kentucky again!!"

And they didn't...

In fact, Tennessee won the next five games in a row vs. Kentucky.

Game 2 - 1975 at TN 103-98 King had 24 pts, 20 reb, Grunfeld had 29 pts, 5 reb

Game 1 - 1976 at KY 90-88 OT King had 24 pts, 10 reb, Grunfeld had 43 pts, 7 reb

Game 2 - 1976 at TN 92-85 King had 22 pts, 6 reb, Grunfeld had 32 pts, 8 reb

Game 1 - 1977 at KY 71-67 OT King had 16 pts, 19 reb, Grunfeld had 22 pts, 3 reb, Reggie Johnson had 18 pts, 13 reb

Game 2 - 1977 at TN 81-79 King had 36 pts, 11 reb, Grunfeld had 9 pts, 13 reb

It's a crime King is not already in the BB HOF. Surely he gets in this year. Best player ever in the SEC. Good point about the # of shots Maravich took vs. King. King could have averaged 50 points a game if he shot the ball 38 times a game like Maravich did.

Never too late to right a wrong!!!! This explains why.

“Bernard King. Bernard King. Bernard King,” said Dominique Wilkins. “I’ve been saying that for years. Bernard King. There should be no debate about it. Bernard King should be in the Hall of Fame.

“I don’t understand why he isn’t there yet. I tell you, I never feared anybody that I ever played against, but I lived in fear of him. The guy was a machine. You could not guard him 1-on-1. You can ask any of the greats of that era. You could not guard him 1-on-1. It was impossible.”

Vote him in now please.
:twocents:

I love 'Nique. Awesome comments.

John Ward has said that King was the best UT athlete he covered during his entire tenure at UT.
