that team had some names on it.. Charles Davis, Reggie Cobb, Keith Delong, Alvin Harper.. so my question is why the heck is Dale Jones on the cover I was 12 and though I was watching football I didn't follow that hard and know most of those guys from the NFL and in the case of Charles Davis ESPN. I really got into football during the Kelley years which was a couple years later.
Hey! That’s exactly the time I got into it. Know much less about the teams before then. Really got into it in the Shuler years though.

Same.. I was watching like right around 85-88 but only really got into football in high school.. it was a different world where most things were via newspaper box scores on Sunday and monday. I'd follow all the box scores for the Lakers and Niners and UTC and UT and catch games at my Uncle's house when I was over on the weekends. It wasn't until I got to college and had my own TV that I was able to watch a lot of games that would have been the early 90's aka Shuler time

Other than Davis, none of the names you mentioned had made a name for themselves at the time that 1986 media guide was produced. Cobb was an incoming freshman who ended up redshirting in 1986. Same for Alvin Harper. Keith DeLong was a backup as a true freshman in 1985. And you're asking why those guys weren't on the cover over the heart and soul of the 1985 defense?

Did they not paint the rock in '86? I know they did in '93 when I went there.

Found this program from 1986 today in a collectible store in South Alabama today. Simply amazing the shape it’s in for being 37 years old.

This makes me want to go back and find the oldest in my collection, but I don't have one this old. I'd have to find my collection first. I've stopped buying them. They were really fun reading the prospects articles. I think they even used to have a comprehensive list of Tennessee high school players to watch out for all over the state.

For any of you guys that were in TN high schools and any good during the late 80's and early 90's your name might be in one of those books.

I don't think Alvin Harper was on that team. Clinkscale, Woods, Miller?, others. I think Zeigler. Off the top of my head.

Alvin Harper played from 1987-1990.

TD Woods was a good WR on teams which mostly ran the ball.

Darrin Miller was on the '86 team; solid player. Most Vol fans will remember his 96 yard interception return vs Iowa in 1987.
* Just realized that you were probably talking about Anthony Miller, since the other guys you mentioned were also WR's

My older sister was a student on the hill back then and went on a date with Kelly Ziegler. TMI ... I know.

Right. That book look from around '86 but maybe I should've looked closer or read the thread. Could've been '87.

Don't remember the Miller return.

Off topic, but every Vol fan should be familiar with this play. It's a classic. I wish I had it with John Ward's call, but it's the ABC crew. They call it a fumble return in the header, but Miller actually caught the pitch out of the air. In college football at the time, defenders could not advance recovered fumbles.

Ok. This was the '87 Kickoff Classic if I remember correctly. Was it on a Thursday?
