Best debut album ?

Thought of another not listed. Whether you liked the music or not, there is no denying Alanis Morissette provided the soundtrack for '95/'96. That album was everywhere. Although she released other albums in Canada, this was her first worldwide debut. And who provided her pain which inspired the music on the album?...Dave Coulier (rumored) of Full House fame.

Reminds me of the way Billie Eilish has hit the scene, except without the staying power.

56 posts and nobody mentioned Illmatic by Nas, this forum is extremely white.
NWA Straight Outta Compton is the best of the genre. Probably feels that way to me because it was released when i was in high school.
There was a lot of talent in that group. And Dre may be the most influential person in the history of hip hop.

About the time rap went wrong.
It went from a unifying, positive message, to this garbage. Misogyny, violence, and filth.

I don't know if it was the origination of "gangsta rap" but it certainly was influential in the genre. Ironically, I feel like Tipper Gore's push to put ratings on albums actually increased interest in the harder stuff. The "Warning, explicit lyrics" attracted teenagers like a moth to a flame.

I couldn’t say, but I doubt the average person in the hood even know that stuff was going on.

It was the first that really went mainstream, that I rememeber. The explicit lyrics was definitely a selling point, I was 13ish and"As Nasty As They Wanna Be" was a must have partially because it made all the grown ups so mad.

A lot of good albums mentioned here but one of my favorites and underappreciated groups except by old head hip hop fans was

Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) is arguably the greatest rap album ever made. Can't believe this thread is 3 pages deep and hasn't been mentioned.Enter the Wu
