At 58.8 ppg Tennessee has the best scoring D in the SEC.
#5 in the nation.
No other SEC team is even top 25 nationally, and only 4 teams are in top 50.

34. Georgia - 65.1 ppg
40/41. Florida/Ole Miss tied - 65.6 ppg
49. Auburn - 66.1 ppg

Despite how we played in the Vandy game, most of us probably aren't surprised we're doing as good as we are on D. I'm just surprised that that we are as high as we are with SEC being so good.

Offense on the other hand?

Almost dead last at 76.8 ppg.
Only South Carolina and Texas A&M are worse.
Nationally we are #130. 130 th! 😌
(Alabama is #1 at 90.2 ppg)

With our defense, to be where we need to be
we need to average about 81 ppg ( @50th nationally).
It might just be the die hard fan in me, but I still think it's achievable.
What do you think?

Another thing that is interesting is that while Alabama has the best scoring offense in the SEC and in the Nation, they are last in the SEC and #320 nationally! Kentucky is similar.
( #2 offense SEC/#2 nationally /#291 defense)
Their fans are probably making a similar post about their Defense. 😆

Just goes to show in college basketball good offense is definitely more valuable than a good defensive.

Average is skewed by the 43 point night at UF. We won't shoot 21% often.....probably won't do it again this season.

Rest of the games we are in the 70's to high 80's.

A 43 pt outing will do that to you🤣

True, but we had a couple games close to
or over a 100 against the likes of Austin Peay that help straighten that out.
The thing about stats is as the year moves on,
they tend to paint a decently accurate picture of who you are.

Barnes' teams are notorious for offensive lapses. We've seen it in every one of his UT teams. Great defense, but sometimes can't score to save it.

Barnes has made attempts to recruit better shooters to help the offensive problems but just cannot seem to solve it. DK helped a lot last season. Chaz is now struggling.

We are 22nd in offensive efficiency on KenPom. It adjusts for your opponent.

^^^^^^^

This is the answer here.

Since 2000, teams (other than the Napier UConn team that went on a heater) that are top 20 in offensive AND defensive efficiency win nattys.

If the offensive efficiency stays in this area or slightly improves, then all expectations for this season should be on the table. If it dips into 30s and 40s, then yeah, a readjustment of expectations is warranted....

I was disappointed we lost in Nashville. I thought we were going to pull it out ... in spite of ourselves.
At their currently level of play ... expect to see Vandy in the dance, but we (and they) are only 1/3 of the way through after tonight.
Vandy might go 2-6 in the next 8 games. Yeah ... it is possible. More likely 3-5 would be my projection .... expect they to lose 4 road games at the very best!!!
Key game stats:
Bad FT shooting.
We were out rebounded.
I thought there was a discrepancy between how the fouls were called, but that happens. Grin and bear it.
Offensive flow is a work in progress. We are making progress ... looking for another step forward tonight.
We are being schooled on ways to beat our defense ... we will solve those one at a time.
@bleedingTNorange is schooling us ... need to win tonight to go 2-1 in the 2nd set of 3 games.
Another 2-1 in set 3 is possible, but we need more offense to pull it off.

Actually, I feel pretty good about where we are at ... considering it is late middle of January.

Chaz went through a mini 3 game slump but did not struggle shooting against Vandy. He struggled being strong with the ball. He is still shooting 42.7% from 3 for the year.

Is it any surprise that Coach Barns has a defense ranked super high. Always does, always will . But come tourney time better be able to shoot the rock.

Our offense definitely needs to improve, but the ppg stat is deceptive. It penalizes teams like us who are good at defense and limit the number of offensive possessions. Our defense causes more teams to take longer to shoot and run the clock down more.
