JJohnson was the real catalyst for the speed over size on D change. He's easily one of the top 5 ever, but his longevity leaves him from the debate.

he could come back to college today and dominate. no doubt in my mind.

Not to mention he won at the next level, too. One of the greatest overall football coaches, ever, no doubt.

How old is he, now? I think he'd struggle, but I guess I don't know how hard he'd be willing to work at this point.

And agreed about McKay.

67 according to wikipedia. so i was way off. not that old though.
Not super old, but I think old enough that he wouldn't be able to put in the effort to dominate, at least not for very long. I guess it depends on him, though.

Dropping admission standards to next to nothing and using JUCO players is revolutionary?

Exactly and it was revolutionary at the time. I don't think any fan cares where their players come as long as they produce on the field. KSU is no academic standout anyhow. I also agree using a soft OOC schedule was a good idea to get that program rolling, after all they do play in the Big 12.

Kansas State had admission standards before Snyder?

C'mon, you know as well as I do that Kansas State has traditionally been little more than a community college in terms of admission standards.

Granted, no one will ever confuse KSU with Stanford, but to say playing weak OOC competition and admitting guys too dumb to go elsewhere is "revolutionary"?

Give me a break...and it's not as though KSU has a bunch of championships to show for being so "revolutionary". If that were the case Mississippi State would have several SEC and national titles by now.

Snyder has no place whatsoever in this discussion.

The caliber of both players and coaches in the SWAC pre-integration is absolutely staggering. Nearly every great black player of the 1960s or 1970s came from that conference or from another HBCU.

Off the all-time AFL team, Clem Daniels (Prairie View A&M), Winston Hill (Texas Southern), Willie Brown and Buck Buchanan (Grambling), Tombstone Jackson (Southern). From the NFL's all-1960s team came Leroy Kelly (Morgan State), Willie Davis (Grambling), Deacon Jones (South Carolina State), and Lem Barney (Jackson State). From the NFL's all-1970s team were Walter Payton (Jackson State), Art Shell (Maryland-Eastern Shore), Rayfield Wright (Fort Valley State), Larry Little (Bethune-Cookman), Harold Carmichael (Southern), Ken Houston (Prairie View A&M), LC Greenwood (Arkansas-Pine Bluff), and Robert Brazile (Jackson State).

Yeah, these guys could play a little football. That doesn't even include guys like Otis Taylor either.

In those years I always made it a point to read The Sporting News for football because I could read about these guys and next thing you know one of them's starring for an NFL team. TSN was the only one giving them status except pro scouts. TSN is not the same as it once was, but at that time it was "sort of" inside information. For me and my football buds it was fun to answer "who's that?" questions while watching games with a group.
