Yeah, they actually had albums and greatest hits, etc. They can pass as a real band. I think it was a TV show that spawned a band, and not the other way around.

were put together by producers for the tv show, then became a real band IIRC

When I think real band, I think "Did music first. anything else happened later" not "Was a comedy show or made by tv as producers, then became a real band" but that's just me. That's why I feel as if The Blues Brothers and Monkees qualify.
