Just like they'll know the name Earnhardt, he made a sport what it is and put it on the map.
That issue is distinctly regional in nature... In the south and midwest he's legendary. Here, in most cases, he's the butt of a redneck joke at best, in terms of name recognition.

That's where the ignorance factor comes in. Too much of the country is ignorant about NASCAR to really know who he is, but if they hear the name 'Earnhardt' they still know he was a racecar driver.

give it some more years.

and i say ruth has tons more historical value than dale but here is my problem. no one that is breathing except some old folk seen him play. we know nothing exept the monster fish stories we have been told.
ruth played without all the media we have now and all the publicity. he is like a bigger than life fairy tale like paul bunyun and some of the stories i hear are very far fetched. but we got to see dale sr first hand. all his stuff is taped and sealed.
to me that difference means alot.
Hm... Video evidence is a requirement? Doesn't matter, you don't need it for baseball. The sport is obviously very statistical in nature, and they do have records from Ruth's games. And I think the "Paul Bunyon" stories about Ruth add all the more to his status as the best #3 ever. Once again, it's just a regional debate. In the south, this is a legitimate argument. Anywhere else, not even close. This list is all opinion, obviously. Nobody is right or wrong. All just difference of opinion.

The 1850s came before the 1950s. Do you wish to debate that assertion?

Dale Earnhardt is to Nascar as Babe Ruth is to Baseball as Dick Webber is to bowling as Jack Nicklaus is to golf as Johnny Unitas/Gayle Sayers are to football as Muhammed Ali is to Boxing as Mark Spitz is to swimming as Gordie Howe is to Hockey......IMO

Alright, Charles. Baseball is woven throughout the historical fabric of America. Volumes of literature has been written about the game. Brilliant movies like The Natural, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Bang The Drum Slowly, and Eight Men Out have had baseball at their core. NASCAR's contribution in those respects are Days of Thunder and Stroker Ace. Yeah, baseball and NASCAR are of comparable historical significance. Kind of like the way Thomas Jefferson is comparable historically to Cledus T. Judd.

Oh, I don't want to shortchange NASCAR. I forgot the Kenny Rogers cinematic classic Six Pack.

And baseball > NASCAR in historical significance, therefore Ruth > Earnhardt

All in my estimation

Nominees For 11 thru 15...

Also, someone mentioned Pele. Great athlete, and Beckham too, but we're sticking to the athletes who mostly practiced their trade here in America.

11- Mark Messier and Isiah Thomas...here's a nod to the women, Julie Foudy

13- Wilt or Marino

14- nominated earlier...Ernie Banks

seems to be an all base ball list.... for no. 2...didn't doug flutie where 2? i don't nominate him solely on athletic ability...but they guy epitomizes what sport is supposed to be about.....talk about team player (at least later on in his career anyway), and he's been an ambassador off the feild as well...

and as for 8, you could make an arguement for Troy Aikman.

12...Staubach? Bradshaw?
13 Marino
14...Fouts?
15 Bart Star
16...Montana
19 John Unitas
20 Barry Sanders
22 Emitt Smith
24 Willie Mays
32 Jim Brown
34 Walter Payton

Just an effort to get it on football...

51 Dick Butkis
56 Lawrence Taylor
80 Jerry Rice
82 John Stalworth/John taylor
88 Michael Irvin/Lynn Swann
92 Reggie White

Yeah Jake, I was a little surprised baseball was so high on everyone's list myself. Then again, those lower numbers were worn by some names that one simply would have a hard time arguing with. As your list points out, the higher numbers would start to skew such a list towards football. I'd like to see us finish out the numbers, but interest in this waned after the Babe/Earnhardt discussion died down...
