Miracle. I know it's a sports movie, but that was as American as it gets. Especially taking down the Soviet union
I think this is the best answer so far, because it's not based on war or a military battle. It's based on a completely factual sporting event that most of us are familiar with and they didn't take many dramatic licenses. The amount of details they got right were impressive. For example:
Kenny Morrow, the tall left-handed defensemen, is the only player for the USA shown with a beard. That is fact. Coach Herb Brooks issued a no-facial hair rule for the team but since Morrow was much older (25) than the rest of the team and already had a beard, he was allowed to keep it.
Mark Johnson's first of two goals really did come as time expired in the first period and the Soviets really did overreact to it by benching their goalie - who was considered the best in the world at the time.
Every line of dialogue spoken by Al Michaels during his telecast comes directly from a transcript of the game... the famous call at the end, was the actual call itself.
Kurt Russell's reaction to Mike Eruzione's go-ahead goal in the 3rd period is exactly what coach Herb Brooks did.
Goalie Jim Craig really did ask "Where's my dad?" as ABC was trying to get near him for an interview after the game... and he really was draped in the American flag.
