Best Tennessee Linebackers

Al Wilson tops the list. He basically coached the team too. At least from an emotional standpoint. He held every player accountable and they responded to him and his leadership. No one before or after was or will be as effective as he.

He deserves a roll on the staff for life. Similar to a position that Holloway holds.

Wilson is the epidomy of Vol For Life!!!!!

Sad part I remember 90% of these guys.. I must be getting old..lol

Almost all of those guys are youngsters! Any article about UT linebackers that doesn't start with Mike Lucci, Paul Naumoff, Steve Kiner, and "Hacksaw" is written by someone with no memory of real history.

Shon Walker and Carey Baily. Along with Daryl Hardy. Even Shazon Bradley before he moved to line. Ben Talley and George Kidd were good together.

There's a thread on Andy Spiva, who played along side Gregg Jones - 73-76ish. As a middle-schooler I watch Gregg Jones and Tennessee High win back to back state championships (they just killed everybody - championship game one year was 52-0). The Vol teams weren't very good those years, but those two guys were total headhunters.

I'm not that old so some of you older guys will probably disagree with this, with that said, my dream team from 98 to now for defense would be:

SDE: Shaun Ellis
DT: Henderson
NT: Haynesworth
WDE: L. Little
WLB: Mayo
MLB: Al Wilson
SLB: Raynoch Thompson
CB: Goodrich
CB: Jason Allen before his injury
SS: Grant
FS: Berry

Our LB play would be unstoppable. It's sad to see just how far we have fallen off the map when you make a dream team starting at 98' and realize that most the players played within 4 years of 98'. We simply haven't produced lots of talent since 2003 really.

Dale Carter should be on the list of corners and safeties, he was also an effective return man.

Luved to hear John Ward shout Andy's name following a big play! Pleasant memories of days gone by.

Absolutely! I wish we had him on campus more than anybody. The fire and passion he had for the game would be contagious!

The way that he hit people would be illegal today.

As fierce of a football player and competitor as he was, he's a super nice guy in person. I'm honored that I got to meet and shake his hand.

The knock for converting players finally caught up with Fulmer in the early 2000's. He would take DB's and convert to LB's. This actually started when Spurrier came into the SEC. The big 250 plus LB's couldn't cover well enough. Then he woukd move reciever's to DB's and at one time they literally ran out of recievers.

During John Chavis run as Tenns DC. many of their best linebackers started or recruited as Tall Safeties or ones that were a little heavy for the position.. In about 24 months after arriving they would be slightly undersized but extremely fast and athletic Linebackers who dominated at the college game. By their redshirt junior year they were studs! A few that come to mind are Al Wilson, Mayo, and others.. Some were running backs who fit the same mold. Just wondering who Tennessee has on their roster that might fit this kind of profile because it works?
Also J Majors used to recruit more DLineman than Olineman and the ones who weren't fast enough to play on Defense were moved to the offense where 2 years "marinating" in the weight room and learning technique had them ready to go on offense and they were meaner than hell with their DLineman mindsets.. I think we will see this from 2 or three DLine Freshmen this year and give them a couple of seasons to get there..

:yahoo::detective:

Dillon Bates, AJ Johnson, Curt Maggitt

:loco:

Al Wilson and Leonard Little get my vote!
