MOST POINTS THROUGH FIRST EIGHT GAMES IN SCHOOL HISTORY
• Tennessee has scored 395 points through the first eight games of the season, breaking the previous modern era (since 1933) UT record of 316 set in 1990. The 1914 team produced 351 points through its first eight games in the pre-modern era.
• The Vols’ 395 points this season (49.4 ppg) lead the nation and are four better than that of Ohio State.

• The 395 points are also the most by an SEC team through eight games since 2018 Alabama had 433 through its first eight games.

Most Points Through First Eight Games in School History

1. 2022 - 395
2. 1914 - 351
3. 1915 - 303
4. 1993 - 299
5. 2021 - 299 IN

Season: 2016 - 473

Great info! Should 1990 (316 points per your post) be #3 in your list rather than 1915 (303)?

17 of the players on the 2001 Miami team were drafted in the 1st round.
Their secondary included Ed Reed, Phillip Buchanan, Antrel Rolle, Mike Rumph, and Sean Taylor. Their running backs were Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, and Najeh Davenport. Ken Dorsey wasn't a great QB, but I'm not sure he even had to wash his uniform all year because it looked like no one ever pressured him. I've never seen a better college football team assembled anywhere.
We had a great season in 2001, but yeah that would have been a remarkable achievement beating that team in the Rose Bowl. Would have been great to at least get a shot at it.

Most of those first round picks didnt see the field that season...that is an amazing stat but without looking maybe 5 of those first rounders saw the field any amount of time that season.

This is a team that dominated that powerful Big East comfernce with narrow wins over an unranked Boston College team (18-7) and 14th ranked Va Tech (24-20).

Had the staff not crapped their pants in Atalanta a NC was within their grasp.

Actually, with respect to the 1938-39 teams, "Tennessee’s 17 consecutive regular-season shutouts might be the most impressive record in the bunch. The streak started on Nov. 30, 1938 when it blanked Tennessee-Chattanooga 45-0 and didn’t end until Oct. 19, 1940, when Alabama scored 12 points in a 27-12 loss to the Vols. The record doesn’t include the postseason games from the same time period: A 17-0 win over Oklahoma in the 1939 Orange Bowl and a 14-0 loss to USC in the 1940 Rose Bowl.
Tennessee outscored its 17 opponents 479-0 during run, a time frame that produced three consecutive SEC titles and the 1938 national championship.

The Vols also hold the NCAA FBS record for the most consecutive quarters opponents held scoreless, 71. That streak lasted from the second quarter of the 14-6 win over LSU on Oct. 29, 1938 until the second quarter of the 27-12 win over Alabama on Oct. 19, 1940.

Although one could say they pretty well had the market on talent cornered at that time, a legitimate argument can be made that the 1944 Army team was the most dominant in college football history. "Army scored 504 points in nine games in 1944, the same year it won a national title. Compare the team’s 56 points per game to Baylor’s 52.4 in 2013, the highest mark in the last decade. The ’44 Black Knights also hold the record for the highest scoring margin (52.11) and the most touchdowns per game (8.22).

1939 Tennessee was unbeaten and unscored upon until the 1940 Rose Bowl(14-0 loss to 7-0-2 USC)

1939 10-1 Tennessee Vols SEC Champions tied with 8-1-1 Tulane and 7-2 Georgia Tech

@NCSU W 13-0
Sewanee W 40-0
@Chattanooga W 28-0
Alabama W 21-0
Mercer W 17-0
@lsu W 20-0
The Citadel W 34-0
Vanderbilt W 13-0
@kentucky W 19-0
Auburn W 7-0

Rose Bowl

USC L 14-0

That bowl game was ideally just considered an exhibition game. Vols were partying on the train ride across county. Probably hung over at the game.

Beating that Miami team would have been an ENORMOUS upset. We'd have been double digit underdogs. The NFL talent on that team was unreal. Maybe more than any team in my lifetime.

We had 10 guys drafted that year. Miami had 11.

The following year we both had 8.

Not exactly a wide talent gap.

This is not the best UT offense ever. This is the best coached offense ever.

The 90s teams were loaded.

Even the Bray team had as much or more talent across the board.

That is why everyone is freaking out around the NCAA. They know CJH doesn’t even have an elite roster yet. When we are two deep with 4 and 5s he will be unstoppable the way he schemes.

I agree with all of your points but I just don’t think the score would be as close. When you watch a game now every drive looks almost like what the 98 teams’s highlight reel looked like.

Gonna have to disagree with you on this. The 98 team was deeper and had a much better defense. But, the determining factor to me was, the 98 team just refused to lose. With that said, if the 22 team runs the table and/or wins the National Championship, the conversation changes.

What would a matchup between this ‘22 offense and that ‘98 defense look like? That would be an awesome spring game.

What would a matchup between this ‘22 offense and that ‘98 defense look like? That would be an awesome spring game.

In the late 90s, there was always a lot of chirping in practice between the offense and defense and the competition was fierce. Apparently, the defense took this personally and at their request, they made a 1v1 scrimmage live. After about four plays, they stopped that because Tee Martin was getting lit up by the defense. The 98 team was just built differently than any other team. They refused to lose under any circumstance.

The week before the 98 Vols went to Athens, UGA had destroyed a very good LSU team in Baton Rouge and the Vols had won a low scoring game at Auburn in which Jamal Lewis had a season ending injury. Quincy Carter was a freshman QB and he had dominated LSU with his passing and running. Both teams were undefeated coming into the game and UGA was favored and picked to win by many. The Vols completely shut UGA down and won 22-3 in a game that was not as close as the score. That's how you win championships.

Now, to be fair, under today's rules, most of Vols' 98 defense would be ejected before halftime with the way they hit people.
