Does "King of the Wild Frontier" count as a Western?

Wayne was given deferments, first for family, then for national interest (acting). He could have enlisted, but never did.

Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.

Don't know if it's the best but it's a favorite.

I wish the movie was as good as the book, McMurtrey is an all time great novelist.

I've read alot of his non western stuff as well, all great.

You hear that a lot, not just with this movie.

The original cast was stellar.

Duvall and Jones were perfect fits.
I enjoyed Dead Man's Walk, and Comanche Moon as well. They are not LD, but I enjoyed the whole story line.

Am I right on that? Heard he dodged the draft.

My history book in college had an anecdote about Wayne. It claimed he tried to enlist and they denied him for health reasons so he put his focus on making movies to inspire patriotism.

I can't recall where I read it, but I remember that he started the process to enlist in John Ford's Naval unit a few times, but never followed through. Several people have commented that his super-patriotism after the war developed more from guilt over not serving than anything else.

Rio Bravo is good, but there's something about singing cowboys that takes it down a notch for me.
