I can't remember the year or the kicker but in the Bill Battle era, in a game against Auburn ...pouring down rain.. Vols up 21-0...punting on 3rd downs....consistantly 60 plus yards... I remember it well listening to John Ward's audio painting of the game

That was the hardest rain I've ever been in. Most people have enough sense to get out of weather like that, but not football fans. I was watcing the game from the West stands about 20 rows up on the 40 yard line. A friend with me had on a rain slicker. He was holding the thing tight around his neck. He let loose to change hands, and when he did, so much rain went under the slicker that it ran out his shoes.

The punts were a great strategy on a horrible field.

Did Leaverton has some big mental issues at first? Seems like his freshman year at UCLA (1996 I think) he put one straight up in the air for possibly negative net yards. If memory serves correct, that would be my nomination for worst punt.

Or in that same game Leverton was looking to one side when the ball was snapped and it went through the end zone. While technically not a punt it had to be the worst play in punt formation in Vol’s history.
