Each game that I watch, I'm going to take stats that don't show up in the box score offensively and defensively. This will tell us a little bit more about the game than just what the scoreboard tells us. If you have any questions, go ahead and ask.

Offensive Stats
Basket Attacks shots (Drive to the bucket): 18
Bad Shots: 12
Shots off screens/pick-n-rolls: 3
Points off backdoor cuts: 6
Post up opportunities: 6
Open Shots: 16
Put back points: 6

Defensive Stats
Post shots given up: 5
Contested Shots: 40
Easy baskets given up: 16
Forced Turnovers: 7
Shots opponent had with 10 seconds left or less on the shot clock: 2

My thoughts:

1. Tennessee gave up a lot of easy baskets because they killed us on the offensive glass. I thought outside the paint, we did a good job covering. We gave up 16 offensive rebounds. Inexcusable.

2. Getting 18 shots off drives surprised me a little. But that was a good number to see.

3. We only had six post up shots. I think Maymon should get that per game alone. That number needs to go up.

4. Our post players did a good job defensively. They only gave up 5 shots against UNCG post players.

5. Finally, only 12 bad shots were taken. That was an improvement by itself from last year. I thought the team took smart shots. And even with those bad shots, three or four of them went down anyways.

3. Guards were not passing it inside. Saw Maymon and Hall open on numerous occasions.

Very good stuff! Its fun to back up(or contridict) what we think we saw during the game. I thought our post D wasn't very strong at all but your numbers say the opposite. Am I reading that only 5 times the ball was given on the block for a shot? Seemed more than that. Threads like this should make us understand why coaches say let me see the film before I rush to judgment(I know you Fulmer haters will love that one). The fact is what we think we see isn't always so. Especially those of us who are far from experts.

Yes. Only have 5 post up shots were taken.

And this is part of why I wanted to do this. I remember a couple games last year I'd say "Oh this was a problem during the game" and it wasn't. The other part is I'm really curious to see how we perform in other parts of the game. Yes, they shot 42%, but was that because they were hitting shots, or we were contesting them? They had 16 turnovers, but how many were actually forced? We hit a ton of shots, but is that because we were lucky or getting good look and driving to the bucket? Stuff like that I'm really interested to keep an eye on.

Carry on then. That just sounds like an awfully high % of totally uncontested shots.

Law, I didn't realize this, but they had a ton of paint points. 32 out of 63. That's probably why the % was lower than we thought.

How did you count that opening shot by Maymon? I am inclined to think bad shot

Open 17 footer. And he was wide open. I didn't think it was that bad of a shot because his jumper has improved. JMO.

There is a lot of "subjective" analysis in here. To some people, a good shot to them is a bad shot to me or vice versa. But it will still give us an overall look at how our shot selection is.

Maymon's got to get better at being more aggressive defending the post.

I think it's more rebounding than defending the post. They had very few post buckets. I think that A) the help defense could have been better. B) They just sucked at rebounding. But yes, they do need to be more aggressive, especially Maymon with his height disadvantage.
