Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez says Big Ten will amplify call for a 12th team - ESPN

Sounds kinda funny.. The big 10, wants a 12th team.

Notre Dame would be the obvious choice geographically, but I don't see them giving up their deal with NBC.

Maybe a Big 12 school like Iowa St., Missou, Nebraska. Then Arkansas could go to the Big 12 where they might actually be able to compete for something.

Big East Schools like Pitt, Syracuse, WVU, Cincy also work geographically. Maybe even Rutgers.

Kentucky would be interesting for them to think about. I wonder if the addition of another good basketball program would entice them to consider UK.

IMO, any choice that gave the SEC the opportunity to drop Arkansas or Kentucky would be a positive. Then we could add another big time school like FSU or Clemson, maybe in VA Tech or GA Tech.

So the SEC would be left with 11 teams?

Just wondering how that would make sense.

Um... why would the SEC drop Kentucky? I hate them in every way but do you really want to be the worst conference in the country for basketball? Without Kentucky, the conference would be trash.

Can you read the next line of the post? In my hypo we would repace Arkansas or Kentucky with one of Clemson,FSU,GT,VT thats a win for the SEC.

Yes UK would be missed in bball, sort of. UT, UF, LSU, Miss St. all have proud basketball traditions as well.

Have you forgot how hard Bobby Bowden RAN from the SEC and the yearly hard competition? They had their chance and wanted to go to a conference they could dominate. Kinda nice they have fell on losing ways.

Actually, didn't forget, but that must have happened before my time because I don't know anything about it (born 1986). Things have changed though over the last 15-20 years. I'm not advocating the SEC going out and just kicking out ARK/UK, I'm saying if the Big 10 were to take UK or if they took a current Big 12 team and Ark decided to leave for the Big 12 then I think the SEC would end up better in the long run with one of the big time ACC teams.

Just playing around with this. Assume they can convince Notre Dame to join the Big Ten. Here is how they could possibly divide the conference into divisions.

It'd be interesting to see who they would pair up as "traditional rivals" that meet every year (Mich-Ohio St is obvious)

Big 10 North "Great Lakes"?
Michigan
Michigan St
Notre Dame
Wisconsin
Northwestern
Minnesota

Big 10 South "Ohio River"?
Ohio St
Penn St
Purdue
Iowa
Illinois
Indiana

I like yours. Here is what I came up with:

North:

Minnesota
Wisconsin
Iowa
Mich
Mich St.
ND

South:

Penn St.
Ohio St.
Purdue
Indiana
Illinois
NW

interdivisional rivalries: Mich/OSU, ND/Purdue, Penn St/Mich St, Indiana/Wiskey, NW/Iowa, Minnesota/Illinois

I agree that it seems right to put Iowa with Minnesota and Wisconsin. But you can't put Indiana, Illinois, and Northwestern in the same division - too unbalanced.

Notre Dame will not be joining a conference for football. I'd imagine the new team would be coming from the Big East.

I hope it's WVU if they end up expanding.

Then they can finally drop that auto bid for the Big Least and call it good.

Big East would just add more mediocre teams like UCF and Memphis, maybe even bring back Temple and keep their auto bid. The Big East's auto bid isn't going anywhere, and don't be surprised if the Mountain West gets one soon. With all this talk on capitol hill heating up about a playoff, the BCS will have to start spreading more of the money around to keep Congress off their backs. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see the MWC add Boise St, Fresno St, and Nevada and get an auto BCS slot in the next few years.

UK needs the SEC's football $$$.

The SEC needs the exposure and $$$ UK hoops brings in.

UK isn't going anywhere.

I think the Big Ten would be smart if they kept OSU and Michigan in the same division since they meet the last game of the year, like Bama-Auburn. I couldn't imagine beating your rival, only to have to play them again a week later for the conference championship, unless they move the game which isn't happening. The only problem is geographically trying to not load OSU-UM's division with Penn State, plus maybe a Big East team.

Most of the B10 fans I talk to say that Syracuse would be the one that they want as the 12th team.

But then again, I remember reading an article on SI.com a couple of years back, proposing what teams could join the B10 as a 12th team. Guess which team was on the list?

Tennessee. Yea, it was that absurd.

Syracuse? Really? That's the first I've heard of them in the mix. They may be on their way back up, but they're too far east compared to other schools being talked about to make sense to me. They'd be great for bball but that's not why a 12th team is desired.

Location doesn't matter anymore. It's not like Milwaukee or Chicago are considered eastern yet they have Big East teams. I don't think St Louis U is anywhere near the Atlantic but they're in the A-10.

Syracuse brings a lot of NYC viewers.

Those Big East teams you refer to are only in basketball though. CFB conferences usually have their teams in fairly close proximity. I've heard people mention Penn St being further than other Big Ten schools as a reason to bring in Pitt.

I think, and hope, the Big Ten is more worried about getting a quality team than bringing in the NY audience. I'm not even sure how much they would care either considering how relevant SU's been in the past decade.

Miami should have NEVER left the big east. with VT going to the ACC they would have dominated forever. it would be like a sec team in the big east. stupid stupid...
