Big 10 thinking of adding 12th team

The "Big North", or my proposed conference name in case a 12th team is added should truly consider WVU. It borders both PA and OH so it's not too far away in terms of geographics. It fields some decent football and other sports teams and it seems like this push is coming from a football-mentality.

Rutgers is another one I've heard thrown in the mix.

I think that the B10, if they decide to expand, should really try and get a team from the general vicinity of NYC(Cuse, Rutgers).

Those Big East teams you refer to are only in basketball though. CFB conferences usually have their teams in fairly close proximity. I've heard people mention Penn St being further than other Big Ten schools as a reason to bring in Pitt.

I think, and hope, the Big Ten is more worried about getting a quality team than bringing in the NY audience. I'm not even sure how much they would care either considering how relevant SU's been in the past decade.

Seems to me like proximity would more of an issue for basketball programs. You only travel once a week in football.

It's not like the Big 10 is going to pursue Fordham for NY, but market size is a big factor these days.

That would not make any regional sense.

If the Little 10 decides to add a 12th team, then they may finally decide to grow up and add a Conference Championship Game held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy.

It's time for this conference to get with the times!

Why not? I would think that the Big 10 would want some kind of presence in a media market that's probably the largest on this planet.

The Big 10 is mainly teams from the Midwest. That is why you are hearing ND and West Virginia because of the proximity to the region. I won't be surprised if Iowa State or Missouri is thrown in the mix. Adding a team like Rutgers would be like the SEC adding a team like SMU.

It wouldn't be unprecedented. Houston tried to join the SEC in the mid-70's. Besides, the only rule I can even think of that the Big 10 abides by in terms of expansion goes something like this.

"A requirement for a school looking for Big 10 membership, is that their state must border a state that already has a Big Ten institution"

And, if I'm not mistaken, Rutgers and Syracuse meet those requirements.

You would think that, but look at how far and often basketball teams travel compared to football. About every preseason tournament is far from a team's home. Many schools don't like to leave their state for OOC football games but their basketball teams regularly do.

I'd be pretty disappointed if they added Syracuse based solely on their market. SU played several Big Ten teams this year and I couldn't have cared less. Rutgers would at least make things more competitive.

I think all the BCS conferences should have 12 teams and a conference championship game. Taking a team from another BCS conference doesn't really make any sense to me.

UConn and Boston College, and Maryland for that matter, are in the same 'vicinity' to NYC as Syracuse

Big East would just add more mediocre teams like UCF and Memphis, maybe even bring back Temple and keep their auto bid. The Big East's auto bid isn't going anywhere, and don't be surprised if the Mountain West gets one soon. With all this talk on capitol hill heating up about a playoff, the BCS will have to start spreading more of the money around to keep Congress off their backs. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see the MWC add Boise St, Fresno St, and Nevada and get an auto BCS slot in the next few years.

How is Memphis mediocre? In last 6 years Memphis has gone to 4 bowl games in football, NC game, 2 E8, Sweet 16 in basketball, NCAA tourney in baseball, and Soccer. The majority of schools in the Big East, and most BCS conferences for that matter, can't say the same thing. Heck, half the schools in the Big East don't even play D-1 football.

Having La Tech in the WAC shoots a hole in your theory.

You can be mediocre and still play in bowl games. Granted Tommy got them to more bowls than ever but how much is that actually saying? Things MIGHT change with Larry though, we will see. Memphis just better hope RC isn't going to run the BCS drive into the ground.....like pissing off your biggest donor/promoter.

Not really since I'm talking BCS conferences and nobody cares about La Tech. There's a reason they're in Louisiana but in the WAC. And I'm not sure if you know what a "theory" is.

Just FYI, and people forget this... From what I remember, the rule for having a conference title game is that a conference must have 12 teams in order to do so.

Notre Dame would never do it.

I'd say Cincy or maybe Pitt as the second logical choice.

Still, though, with the basketball arrangement I'm not sure the Big East will let them leave.

I imagine it'll probably be a team like Iowa State or Missouri--both Midwestern state teams.

The Big East won't let their better teams just waltz out of the conference, but since Iowa State and Mizzou aren't exactly powerhouses in the Big 12, you may see one of them be allowed to leave and join the Big 10.

Then the Big 12 would pick up a team like TCU, BYU, or Utah.
