Smith Delivers
Kyle Prater?
Posted: Monday, January 11th, 2010, 11:34 AM

Ultimate
Sports
Fantasy! Stop by our remotes and get registered! The Grand Prize winner gets these home tickets:
? Kansas
? All SEC
Home Games!!
'X' Says:
Go ahead, you can admit it. You, those of you reading this, were starting to question .. to doubt where recruiting was heading? Truly, the dead period had you (and many others as well) concerned. Little if any recruiting news during the holiday. Add to the dead period the lingering effects of Hostess Gate, the Willis decommitment, and losing Ken Adams and Bruce Irvin, both committed prospects at one time, deciding to sign with other schools. I understand it. Publicly, it appeared the only momentum associated with UT recruiting was .. well negative..Dont fret Im here to help you.

What a difference a week makes, huh? Last Monday the recruiting contact period resumed. So what is the best thing to generate positive vibes again when your staff hits the road recruiting again? A commitment. If you dont think the public commitment last Monday to UT by Marques Dixon, who is an excellent prospect by the way, was made with purpose you havent been paying attention. Marques Dixons commitment was part of a plan to get Tennessee positive momentum at the start of the January 2010 recruiting contact period.

UT capped off the week that was by receiving a public commitment Friday from safety Ahmad Dixon from Texas who will play early next season for UT. Then, Tennessee received more good news when defensive lineman Brandon Willis "re-committed" to UT during the Army All-American game on Saturday (this was one of the worst kept secrets in recent memory by the way).

Looking forward to the upcoming week with roughly 24 days from National Signing Day here are a few things that warrant your attention. My friends things are just now getting ready to get heated up.

A bit of background first. Remember Basilio first introduced you to names like Da-Rick Rogers, Jalen Fields, Kenbrell Thompkins, and quietly Marques Dixon. Over the next few weeks, you shouldnt be surprised to see the name of a new prospect or two start being rumored to have interest in UT.

This is not by chance or by happenstance. Rather, its the result of months of not giving up on a prospect this staff believes has a chance to help UT early in their football career.

One other point. I should note the information and maybe even "misinformation" being released is tighter now than any time I can remember and I expect that that to continue. With that being said, there are a few developments that can be passed along but not a ton of what I would consider new news.

**UT expects up to 10 mid-term enrollees to be on campus this week unless there are administrative/academic snafus the kids have with grades, transcripts, etc. This of course is not a secret. I couldnt confirm all mid-termers had made it to campus last evening but all should be in by today. What is interesting that at one point UT expected 13 mid-termers. Im beginning to believe that having "only" 10 early enrollees and having those extra scholarships to work with can be viewed as nothing but a positive given the number of prospects UT seems to be in good standing with.

**I wouldnt want to be a UT commitment that is not taking care of his academics nor would I want to be a commitment that may be publicly wavering on his commitment to UT. I have contended since late fall this staff is recruiting like they have more scholarships available than spots available if you look at their current commitment list.

**I would use the current UT commitment list as nothing more than a go-by as it is as fluid as it has been at any time during this recruiting year. I will never single out a prospect by name with grade issues or a commitment in jeopardy of being recruited over. However, you can check out the commitment list and figure the prospects in peril.

** Its no secret Chaz Green is the Number 1 offensive line target on UT's board. After Chaz Green, there is quite a divergence of opinion on just who the top offensive line target or targets are versus those "perceived" by lets say the general public. UT is in great position with Green but by no means is his recruitment over. Even with the limited spots in this recruiting class, at least 2 possibly 3 more offensive lineman will likely be signed along with Zac Fulton and Marquis Pair. For the doubters, James Stone from Nashville Maplewood is still very much a legitimate target for UT. Maybe its just me but I dont think John Cullen winds up at UT. Sure would have helped if he could have been a mid-termer.

**Defensive line recruiting will be fun to watch. UT has one of the best if not the best defensive line coaches in America who is also a pretty good recruiter. UT has set the bar high with respect to the remaining defensive line targets on its board. UT could take two possibly three more defensive lineman here (remember I expect that we are working with more than 5 slots in this class) if the right prospects fall their way. A couple of specific notes. Indications are UT is very much involved with Kelcy Quarles; however, start paying attention if Quarles indeed follows through and takes an official visit. Quarles has led many to believe he will be on campus sometime this month.

**UT is in play with Jeffrey Whitaker a defensive tackle from the Atlanta area as well. Watch to see if defensive end and Georgia commitment Jalen Fields doesnt visits by the end of the month. Staff has been working on this one for months. Havent heard much in the media about the Fields recruitment have you?

** UT will sign at least one maybe two more defensive backs in addition to Ahmad Dixon. There is a cautious optimism but indications are UT is in good shape with a number of defensive backs. It will be interesting to see how UT manages the numbers here.

** Speaking of defensive backs. Expect defensive back prospect Eddrick Lofton from Texas to visit possibly next weekend. Lofton was once committed to Oklahoma but he and Oklahoma have parted ways. From what I was told, the divorce from Oklahoma was not academics as much as Lofton wanted to visit a school or two to make sure he was making the right decision and the Oklahoma staff didnt want him to visit any other schools. Lofton is an intriguing prospect and reminds some of UT linebacker commitment Michael Taylor with his explosiveness and the way he attacks opposing running backs/wide receivers. . Lofton is another example of a prospect this staff targeted and though committed to another program they have never quit or given up on their recruitment of him.

** Understand as of Saturday evening at least 4 maybe 5 prospects committed to USC would be aggressively pursued by UT. The obvious ones of course are Kyle Prater the #1 wide receiver in the country and George Uko a defensive tackle prospect.

The Prater recruitment could get interesting. It is not a secret to Kyle Prater and Zac Fulton are good friends as are their families. Kyle Prater and family took an unofficial visit to UT this summer and liked UT quite a bit. Prater has always wanted to go to USC but of course that has changed now. He plans to be a mid termer or that was the original plan so I would expect a quick resolution to his recruitment. By the way, UT has really never stopped making the calls to him through the process.

**Im beginning to believe signing a tight end that can play early is becoming a real need for this signing class. For that reason, look to UT to at least make a telephone call to USC commitment and tight end prospect Randall Telfar. If the rumors are true and Pete Carroll takes all his assistants to Seattle. all the prospects committed to USC will be starting over with new coaches, schemes, etc. you have to like UTs chances with at least one or more of these prospects committed to USC.

** Here is what is coming up

Today (Monday) begins a Dead Period. The Dead Period last through Thursday.

During the Dead period, coaches cannot have any in-person contact with a prospect or his parents at any time. Coaches may write and telephone a prospect and/or his parents. The exception here of course is the prospects that are enrolled at midterm can have contact with coaches.

Friday, January 15th through Saturday 16th begins a Quiet Period. During the Quiet Period, Coaches cannot have any in-person contact with a prospect or the prospects parents.. Except for on-campus visits (OFFICIAL VISITS). Coaches and staff may not watch a prospect participate in an athletic event or visit your high school. Prospects and parents may visit a college campus during a quiet period. Coaches may write or telephone prospects and parents during this time.

Sunday January 17th through January 30th ....contact period

** UT will have a number of prospects on campus this coming weekend for official visits. Speculation is that Eddrick Lofton (mentioned above), UT commitments Markeith Ambles and Michael Taylor, target Kyle Prater, and others will visit. Again, my opinion. My objective for the upcoming weekend would be to solidify the commitments of Markeith Ambles and Michael Taylor because their individual performances in recent all star games have made both hot commodities. Official visitors wont be firmed up until later in the week.
**How is the rest of the SEC doing? Im not a star grazer or into team recruiting rankings....but some of you are. For those so inclined, here is where each of the other SEC is ranked by Rivals as of last evening. Florida (#1); Alabama (#3); Auburn #5); Tennessee (#6); LSU (#9); and (Georgia #10).

The rest of the SEC is not fairing so well South Carolina (#27); Ole Miss (#34 ); Miss State (#45); Kentucky (#55); Arkansas (#58); and, again pulling up the rear is Vanderbilt whose class is currently ranked 76th.

More to follow
X

****************.

In a million years did you ever think it was possible? Did you ever think that could happen? Did Bruce Pearl? He was trying so hard last week to get Tyler Smith back on the team because the 'climate wasn't there to bring him back'. And now, what was apparent to all of us after the Charlotte game, has been confirmed.

THE VOLS ARE A MUCH BETTER TEAM THAN THEY WERE TWO WEEKS AGO!

Not even close. If Tyler Smith plays yesterday we get beat 20 points!

How fun was it watching those young kids scrap it out against a bunch of five star players?

Kansas got a regal whistle from the refs in our building and we still beat them. WHY? SHEER WILL.

Nothing more, nothing less.

How 'bout the play of Stephen Pearl. Was that kid afraid? Kenny Hall? What a sweet game in the low post. Sure both guys got pushed around but they jacked everybody else up around them. There are no stars now on this team. No entitlement.

Did Skyler McBee Look afraid despite the fact that he missed a couple of open shots before throwing up the game clincher?

Bruce Pearl has been pushed into it but now he has shortened his rotation.

At least for one more game.

As I told you Friday as we were going off the air, the other guys are coming back shortly. Perhaps as soon as after the next game. The first two back will be Cam Tatum and Goins. I'm expecting Brian Williams to be out about 6 more games.

Is this going to be a gain or minus when these guys come back? Is Pearl going to screw this up when these guys come back? What looked like a season that was dead in the water 10 days ago is now one with great promise. And it NEVER happens without that brainless act by those four players! How must those guys feel today? How confused by all this must Bruce Pearl be? How much fun is this?

The thing I love about this is that nobody believed. We saw what we saw against Charlotte.

We were all saying on the show last week that Tennessee is obviously better without Tyler Smith.

Now Bruce Pearl is in a strange spot as a winner who has to admit that his team is better without a guy he never believed they could win without.

That's what I love about yesterday's game. Nobody thought they could win. Not me. Not you. Not Bruce Pearl. Nobody but them.

Now Pearl is in an odd spot on the heals of his greatest win. Does he bring the three wayward Vols back now? Does he wait and let this play out? Does he bring them back and plug them right in? Does he bring them back and let them sit and watch? Does he say to himself, 'I better not get in the way of a good thing here.'

It's still a long season. This team in it's current configuration is going to wear down or have an injury along the way. It happens.

Come what may, these guys will always have the memory of beating #1 Ranked Kansas on a cold, wintry day in Knoxville 10 days after 1/3 of their team got suspended, including the teams 'star' player, Tyler Smith. How great of a story will that be for Skyler McBee in 40 years when he's bouncing his grandson on his knee up in beautiful Rutledge? That's what it's all about!!!

Gary Parrish from CBSSPORTS.com writes a great piece about McBee and the game. Link

AJC Says Kiffin and O turned Simms away from Tide. Link

Jacquez Smith called it right down the middle on Friday when he predicted on the air that UT would get two surprises on Saturday. He was right on the money! And Jacquez is my most valuable player from that game! He went down there and got it done.

Too me, the most impressive guy on the field on Saturday was our WR commitment, Markeith Ambles. Did you see that circus catch he made? You can't teach that. You can't draw that up! We need playmakers!

On Kyle Prater: 'X' says he'd be surprised if he ended up here. His family is friends of the Fulton kid's family who's committed here. Prater's family loved it here but he's liked it here. If we wants to get in this term, things better get moving.

With the guys were involved with, the #'s are starting to not add up. So take that commitment list with a grain of salt. 'X' says there are four or five guys on that list who won't be there at the end of this cycle. Either of commission or there own volition.

By my count we can sign 27 guys and we have 22 commitments with a pool that goes 8 prospects deep. Probably 3 or 4 guys have grade issues. So it's probably 8 or 9 slots open right now with 40 names on 'X's short list.

Now, he won't give me the 40 names. Understand some of the names he has from the master list denote a mild interest from UT to prospect and vice versa.

For perspective, 'X' tells me that our previous staff would have 12-15 names left at this time.

This is what 'X' says is the difference. The depth of recruiting this staff does. To stay involved with this # of high level prospects.

And remember, staying involved is a good thing. As I remind you about the Bryce Brown recruitment last year. Don't count UT out on anyone. Which leads me back to Kyle Prater. Anything can happen, though 'X' says that kid has always wanted to go to USC.

On the USC front, one card UT may want to play is the NCAA card. I spoke to a source over the weekend that one reason Carol is jumping is that he's convinced the NCAA is coming to town. Put it this way, Mike Garrett the AD there tried to offer up the hoops team on a silver platter to the NCAA, but apparently the NCAA wants more. It will be interesting to see what goes down there. It is something I would use against USC for sure.

The US Army All-Star game was really well done. Seeing all those troops was wonderful. Not a lot of histrionics from the players. That game was well done. That wild card QB who is committed to Dartmouth was FANTASTIC in that game! I loved seeing that boy out there and compete against the best and not flinch. Great seeing George Quarrels get a shot and some exposure on the big stage. What a wonderful guy who deserves everything that comes his way!

One thing is for sure, on a weekend where my Eagles laid the biggest egg in franhise history, the Vols picked on the slack. On the recruiting trail and on the court!

Peace

Tone

PS: The Caller DCCOLTRAINE Attacks me in an e-mail!
'The Eagles crisis hotline is open.
