We need to get better across the board. We have a great sports tradition but are handicapped because 1) Tennessee is not a state that itself produces a lot of great athletic talent, so we must recruit nationally--and we do a pretty good job of it. But have to do better so we can start winning some titles. I'm tired of UT just being competitive or a bridesmaid program. And 2) The SEC is a dog eat dog conference--a bunch of sports-mad schools all concentrated in one tight geographic region. This makes it hard for any SEC school to get ahead--it is an uber-competitive, somewhat crazy conference. Look at the Track and Field Championship--dominated by SEC schools. We don't have the luxury of being in great talent state, as florida does, or in an area without a lot of competition--like pa. state and ohio state. And, unfortunately, UT doesn't have the academic rep of universities like stanford and uva, which definitely helps their athletic recruiting in many sports--not necessarily football, but in many sports (tennis, swimming, soccer).
We should always seek great coaches:
Softball: The Weeklys run the strongest program, men or women, at UT. Haven't won a national title, which has been frustrating--but a powerhouse program.
Football; Jones has significantly improved the program, loves UT--but now must win the big SEC games. This is a huge year.
Basketball, men: Barnes will be an improvement on Martin but in latter stages of his career. Need some momentum.
Basketball, women: Warlick is a weak coach who only got the job because she was best friends with Summitt. Do not be misled by her three Elite Eight appearances--all of which we lost, by the way. She's below average. Need a strong, smart, youngish new coach.
Soccer: Pensky came from a strong Maryland program, and he is a good recruiter--talent level is steadily getting stronger. A program with potential but play on the field must improve. Team should be substantially better this year than last--and needs to be.
Tennis: Winterbotham is a very good coach--strong program. On the women's side, Mike Patrick is solid but women's program is not as competitive as the men.
Swimming: Combined mens/women's coach Kredich seems very solid; we are very competitive in a very competitive conference, in a very competitive sport. Diving coach Parrington is first-rate.
Track & Field: Program has a strong tradition, fell into some turmoil a few years ago for reasons not clear to me, but impressed by what I've heard from new combined coach Alford-Sullivan. Men on the upswing; women work in progress. Recruit, recruit.
Volleyball: This program has been weak for several years. Veteran coach Rob Patrick now has a new volleyball facility and he needs to pick up the recruiting significantly or his job could be in jeopardy.
Baseball: Everybody likes Serrano, but we have to get better. Not an easy job.
Rowing: Hard to believe our rowing program is 19 years old. We now compete in the Big 12 conference, and we have a very solid program under Lisa Glenn. We are not elite but program seems to be steadily growing in stature. Just saw the rowing facility for the first time--impressive
Golf: I know nothing about our golf programs, I'm afraid. UTSports raves about our success--but take it with a grain. Coaches seem solid. Input from those who do know men's and women's golf?
