Tennessee game and fish told my grandfather that mtn lions didn't exist in west Tennessee, right after they handed him a 500 dollar ticket for killing one. ( this was in the 70's )
I know of a big black cat circling a cotton trailer back in the 60's (kids were in the trailer packing the cotton) also in west Tennessee.
I grew up in my younger years outside of a town called Moscow. Our place backed up to the wolf river. I heard a loud scream (like a woman) my dad told me it was a big cat ( mtn lion). Scared the crap out of me.
I heard that same thing in the middle of the night on the AT in Peck's Corner backcountry shelter about 11 miles out from Newfound Gap in the GSMNP several years ago. Sounded like a woman or a child/baby making the most awful loud high pitch scream you'd ever heard. Was told the same thing after I left there that it was a big cat making the sound.
I've listened to audio of a mountain lion scream and it sounded the same. I was always curious if a bobcat makes the same sound. I couldn't find anything.
I've seen hundreds of bobcats, never heard a sound like that before.
Arkansas says they don't exist here either. But they captured one a few months ago. Folks around here kept finding their livestock hanging in trees.

I work with someone who has seen a black panther here. I believe it was a discussion point recently and there were multiple panther sightings.
I am not a hunter - I would have to ask around with regard to the mountain lions. I think there are big cats in East Tennessee - there is actually a Cherokee Death Cat - that the Mountain Monster hunters pursued one episode.
