Without our miltary and its overwhelming advantages, where do we root our diplomacy now that economies are intertwined.

The OP implied that the military performs little to no function, which is patently stupid. Every great or dominant civilization in world history has had an overwhelming military advantage. That isn't going to change because some nutjob irrationally thinks nations will soon stop being self interested at the expense of all others.

Maher's statement is implying that reducing the military budget would do just as well as cutting entitlement programs - a method often advocated by conservatives. I think there are a lot of posters on here that would agree that we don't spend money on the military efficiently and would advocate more efficiency. Just recently, for example:

But I don't see any of that reflected in the teabag rhetoric. And whenever anyone suggests axing a cold war military weapon (artillery or fighter jet, for example) all the elected representatives magically change their tune and suddenly government spending is all about "jobs".

Weren't you asking the opinion of posters on this board? If so, why does it matter whose rhetoric it reflects?
