I'm not sure anyone advocating ethanol is advocating the complete exclusion of oil. It's more that oil is getting scarcer and we won't be able to continue using it the way we are without developing some alternatives.

Oh, and Bill Maher's an idiot.

He was talking about this and I assume he meant to say (or should have said) that Brazil imports very little oil due to it's ethanol program and domestic oil.

Those of you claiming that the U.S. can become energy independent should take note because this is the kind of thing it would take.

By the way, I'm curious what the threshold is for an on-air pundit to be judged an "idiot"? Is the OP claiming that it's one factual mistake? Because I'd like to know of any such personality who hasn't made at least one factual mistake.

Enlighten me.

even if we ignore the environmental impact and how it ruins the cars of brazil's ethanol program it should be noted that brazil produces ethanol through sugar cane. a MUCH more efficient crop for ethanol than corn.

He was arguing against domestic production - Brazil is a big oil user; they happen to domestically produce a lot even off shore so his point about getting off oil was wrong.

And he's an idiot for many reasons.

Bill Maher is an idiot for so many reasons it would take hours to discuss them all.

But one that I've always loved is how he describes himself as a libertarian.

They may have to release raw turds into the Cumberland River, in Clarksville.

Was looking for the right thread to release this information, I found it.

I must ask, Is there another way other than raw?????:birgits_giggle:

So let me guess, if you think Bill Maher is an idiot, then you must think Glen Beck is an Einstein?

EOT

What's the source of the ethanol? At what percentage of our automobile fuel do they want it to be? What is the price point they're shooting for? Yay for blanket statements.

in america it's corn which is idiocy. 0% would be preferred. price of ethanol from corn is consistantly higher than oil. sometimes blanket statements are correct.

I could see making it from non-food plants but farming efforts may negate the effects via energy consumption and environmental impact.

hell the water cost just by itself is reason enough to not grow plants for ethanol. there aren't any i'm aware of that don't use boatloads of water. water is more important than oil and in the future will be much more important than oil.

My point is that it doesn't have to be corn. Your point was about those who advocate for ethanol...I'm just saying ethanol from what source and in what concentration in fuel. Butanol would be better, but ethanol from, let's say, corn stover isn't complete idiocy. What is correct about lumping all ethanol advocates in America into corn grain ethanol advocates?

Water use is a very fair attack of biofuels, in general. Land-use is as well. Making biofuel from existing celluosic feedstock, like corn stover or other wastes, is generally fine in these areas. Swithgrass may not be, however, depending on where/how it is grown. This is one reason why closed loop systems for algae growth (to produce biodiesel, perhaps) are interesting to me.

I believe that membrane technology is going to go very far in the next 10-20 years...if so, that could mean huge gains in the water supply department.

as i indicated in my prior post, ethanol from any product is environmentally abusive. ther is also solid evidence that it is not not better for the environment after consumption than gas. the real question is why ethanol? besides helping out the farmers that is.

I agree. Ethanol from algae would be the only comparable alteranative or the U.S.
