I would contend that the very best Vanderbilt coaches, other than McGugin, effectively do more with less. However, they also have hired their fair share of really incompetent coaches, which only exacerbates their conundrum. Like the blue-bellied boys to the north, they have to give new coaches a significantly longer leash than most programs, simply to give them the opportunity to maximize the program's limited potential.
