BJ Edwards status?

It’s interesting because I’m not sure if BJ is offered a scholarship by the Vols if he wasn’t a Knoxvillian. We’ve had a number of Knoxville kids who were offered scholarships that didn’t pan out over the years. Then, you have Knoxville kids that Tennessee didn’t offer that fellow SEC rivals offered and took, almost as if to make Tennessee look bad. Yes, Mike White, we’re talking about you. I don’t thing BJ will ever make a significant contribution here, but I hope he does.

I’m not sure I necessarily agree. Edwards is a much better prospect than some of the local kids that Barnes has offered during his time here. Pember definitely felt like it fit your description a bit better. Edwards was a Top 100 prospect from Knoxville. That doesn’t happen often. We aren’t exactly a basketball powerhouse locally in East Tennessee. I think Edwards has a real shot to contribute down the line. He just needs time to work on his defense on for minutes to open up on a very experienced and talented roster.

Yeah, really pulling for him, but not sure how it pans out. I would be surprised if he doesn’t transfer this year or next, but truly hope I’m wrong. I have been wrong way too often in my lifetime.

You're reaching a bit for that criticism though. We had only 4 guys play more than 20 minutes, and only Santi/Julian played more than 25 minutes.

Aidoo, Mashack, Awaka, JJJ all played 14 or more minutes.
No question. Barnes has historically waited to pull starters in blow out wins. If that’s the only criticism, then we’re doing pretty good!

I was actually very high on Edwards coming into the season.

Obviously with ZZ taking the starting role and JJJ coming back, I don’t see how he’ll be in the rotation.

If Barnes wants him to work on defense then that could be a good reason as well.

With Dilione getting a head start on development by enrolling early, there may never be a path to playing time for Edwards if either Vescovi or James uses the Covid rule to come back next year.

Never? That seems rather bold. I don't agree. I also think the chance either Santi or JJJ return is near 0%. Edwards will get his chance. I don't know why fans are giving up on him so quickly. Maschack barely played last year, and he has found his way into this deep rotation.

Neither of those guys plan on coming back…you lose Key, Vescovi and James there’s going to be plenty of available minutes for Edwards next year.

I think a good number of Santi's minutes are not looking for point production from him, but using him to change the defenses due to the attention he gets. Julian is working on his learning curve.

I think Edwards is a good player long term. I think he can end up having a good career. The talent is there he’s just gotta be patient and see how Mashack has done in his second season for us. I think Vescovi and JJJ both move on after this season, and he will get plenty of opportunities. I do however hope that Olivier uses his Covid year lol. Dude is starting to put it all together.

Edwards is probably not getting minutes because he has too far to go to be able to contribute THIS season. He’s a long term project.

Everybody felt this way about Jordan Bone too, but he turned out good his sophomore and Junior seasons. Edwards will get his shot

Not sure how there’s a comparison? Bone literally started 17 games and averaged at 20mpg, Edwards is chalking up DNP’s and when he does it’s 2-3mpg…I’m not dismissing Edwards as I still like his future but there’s no comparison to Bone.

To counter your argument. That was a freshman laden team, so Bone sort of had to play. Whereas with this team we are a very veteran laden team that just won the SEC tourney. My comparison wasn’t exact, but the roster is apples to oranges. Especially since they finished 16-16 compared to a team this year that may get to 28 wins

For sure, but you stated “everyone felt this way about Jordan Bone”, that wasn’t the case at all given that he was not only playing big minutes but starting too.

On this team though would a freshman Jordan Bone be starting? I honestly don’t think so. You’re right it’s not the same situation, but on that team Edwards probably would’ve played a lot more than he has so far this season as well.

My point being your statement of “everybody felt this way about Jordan Bone” just isn’t accurate imo…people weren’t asking here is he, why’s he not playing or is he going to transfer.
